Remember meanings get lost in translation, asking someone from Germany if something is beautiful carries a different connotation that asking someone from the US. I can't believe any car designer would ever think their car wasn't great, I suspect he thought the question was beautiful = feminine or something of that nature in translation or the interviewer simply misunderstood the answer, hard to tell 3rd hand.
