I don't know much about that part of the state, as I'm on the coast in Wilmington.

I don't think there's much of anything in or around Greene County other than a second-rate party school (ECU), a bunch of hog farms and a state mental hospital.

Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill (the Triangle) is the metropolitan area sort of near where you'll be. With Duke, UNC, NC State and the capital there, you should be able to find plenty of restaurants, shopping and things to do.

Alternatively you could head down toward the water. There's a little town called Oriental on the Pamlico Sound that's favored by sailors. It's quaint, picturesque, and out of the way.
