The EPA has a new methodology for determining the mpg averages as the old method was based on driving situations in the 60s or 70s. With so much more traffic, it was found that most EPA estimates were grossly optimistic. The new methodology is supposed to go into effect for 2008 mpg estimates, and mpg is expected to drop significantly.
