F1: Penalty Doesn't Fit the Crime, Says Stewart

Written by: Adam Cooper, RACER Magazine Paris, France – 9/13/2007

Jackie Stewart says that the penalty applied to McLaren by the World Motor Sport Council does not fit the crime that the team allegedly committed.

The former World Champion and team owner says that there’s more to the recent process than meets the eye.

“There’s something strange going on, there’s no doubt about that,” Stewart told BBC Radio. “From what information we’ve been given so far, this does not constitute a penalty of this scale, with regards to the crime that has supposedly been carried out.

“Even if they’d been found guilty of that particular crime, it doesn’t justify this kind of penalty.”

Stewart also questioned what the FIA plans to do with its $100m windfall.

“The McLaren company is not a poor company, but you have to ask another question – where does the money go? Does that go to the governing body of the sport, have they just gained by a hundred million, or does it go to charity? It sounds very unusual.”
