As a wrap up to this incident:
1) One of the shift linkage cables (there are 2 of them) was severed. This was caused from the T-bar connection of the cables being out of alignment and created a "torque" where the cables were essentially fighting each other with each shift.
2) They replaced both cables (the other cable appeared fine / no damage).
3) Re-centered the gear shift.
Everything is back in working order...
