Changing the final drive ratio may in fact
be the answer depending upon one's objectives. I understand that it is not the answer for your needs, but if one's goal is to increase track performance, then increasing the final drive ratio is a total success. 1st is only used in the paddock, and 6th is only used to drive to the track, and so those gears are irrelevant. Increasing the final drive ratio has the double benefit of improving acceleration at all times in every gear, and also making the relevant gears (2nd, 3rd, 4th, maybe 5th) more "close-ratio". It's a win-win for a track car.
Also, I'm curious as to what changes you think would be beneficial in 2nd - 5th. For the stock car, 2nd has a 30 mph useful range (42-72), 3rd has a 28 mph useful range (72-100), 4th has a 25 mph useful range (100-125), and 5th has a 20 mph useful range (125-145). These seem like very reasonable spacings to me... These "useful ranges" were calculated assuming shifts at redline.
