I have not had any trouble cleaning and waxing my Mom's DE1. I Just stay off the stripes as much as I can and later clean any residue out of the edges of the stripes with a horse hair "toothbrush".

But too be honest it is a pain in the butt. My Mom and I have agreed that it would be a lot easier to detail the car if there were not any stripes on it. And she likes the way my plain black car looks. So next week we are going to remove the stripes.
