Question Cheap exhaust improvement?

Got a guy who's an independent Porsche/BMW/Benz mechanic. His personal cars include a '78 911 Turbo (dyno'd at 410 hp at the wheels) and a 2002 Ti Alpina and another 2002 racer. He has opined to me that an easy way to get good sound out of my car is to simply drill a large bore hole, longitudinally, through each muffler, effectively creating a straight pipe! Has anyone ever done this? On a Cayman? Will all of the muffler guts come spewing out the exhaust? If ever done, what does sound like? Drone? Shake, rattle and roll?
