It happened in the "chute" between turns 4 and 5. There was a lot of speculation but the general consensus was that he carried too much speed down the chute, and then he lifted and spun. He impacted the tire wall from the rear and did a complete 360-degree airborne spin down the wall 10 feet in the air. After landing, he continued to spin another 180 degrees. The fact that he impacted the wall at an angle instead of directly probably saved him from serious injury/death. The car absorbed most of the energy as it spun down the wall.
