This seems to be a grey area. Some insurance companies are specifically excluding coverage if your car so much as touches a track. Your exclusion language can change frequently and more and more insurance companies are writing stronger exclusions for DE type activity. For others, the exclusion language is less clear but the general consensus is that they will fight you over a DE claim. They may end up covering your first incident but you will most likely be dropped afterwards. Calling the company/agent is also problematic because it will alert them to your higher risk activity and they could also summarily drop you. I think a sound strategy is to purchase supplemental, track-only insurance. As someone once said, unless you’re willing to roll your car off a cliff and walk away, you should have guaranteed DE coverage. The incident at Summit Point a few weeks ago drove home that point -- see http://www.caymanclub.net/zone-2/251...mit-point.html
This is Ryan Staub - I developed the HPDE Insurance Program that "jcriggs" posted the link to. Regardless of any informal discussions you might have with your insurance agent, getting your insurer to pay for a claim that occurs at a DE is questionable at best. Don't assume that you have coverage while participating in a DE, get written confirmation before heading to the track. If your agent is confident that the company will pay for your DE claim, he/she shouldn't have any issues putting it in writing.

Even if you think you might have coverage under your personal policy, it is worth considering some type of supplemental policy for DEs. This will shelter your personal policy from potential DE claims and guarantee that you have coverage for DE incidents. After a DE incident 4 years ago, I paid inflated premiums for 3 years to one of the top-rated auto insurers in the country. 2 years later I received an amendment to my policy stating that coverage is excluded for losses that occur on a "surface used for racing." This revised exclusion was added to all policies across the nation except for policyholders in North Carolina.

Later this week our website will offer a "quick quote" option that will give you a premium indication after you enter the total agreed value for your vehicle. This will be a much quicker way to see if this policy is something that you would like to purchase.
