Wrangler for me. I've owned two in the past (YJ & TJ). There are so many mods out there that you can turn that vehicle into just about anything you want. Going topless is a big plus when you do trail. Also, there is a solid camaraderie between Wrangler owners, with lots of off roads activities and annual events
Finally, when you do bang it up, the parts are cheaper...

I agree !!! I had a 95 Moss Green Wrangler Sahara & it was a blast to drive. There are so many mods you can get/do for the jeep & it was easy to work on. Lots of room in the engine compartment. I had the factory hardtop then got the soft & bikini top. Got a suspension lift with big tires & my golden retriever loved sitting in the back with the top down.

Wrangler all the way. Its not as practical, but far more fun and heavy duty. I used to jump mine and otherwise beat the hell out of it. It just kept coming back for more. Short wheelbase made it great in deep snow, better than my Grand Cherokee. Take the top and doors off and its an absolute blast to drive. Not to mention that there is a real Jeep community and aftermarket. The hummer is just a Trail Blazer in disguise. Here today, gone tomorrow.
No offense, but I think of Hummers as being driven by posers who just want the attention and don't ever take them offroad. I'd pick the Wrangler out of the two.

Ditto. Plus the requisite cell phone on their ear while blocking traffic in intersections. No thanks.
Wrangler, no question here what so ever. I have 3, they have gone through 2 teenage drivers and have been towed many miles behind our bus. I just pass them down to the kids as they need them and keep one for myself. mods are great, inexpensive and simply to do.
Don't rule out the 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha with the 296HP V8 rather than the underpowerded straight 5. It really transforms the vehicle. They have upgraded the underpinnings substantially too and it is now a very capable off road vehicle. The original H3 was OK but mostly just a mid size pickup with a different body; the Alpha changes this dramatically.
The FJ is like a less expensive version of the H3 and a bit smaller, but suffers from the same hard to see out of syndrome that the H3 has IMHO, whereas you can strip the top off the Jeep and the doors and be one with nature.
K-Man, read what Autoweek had to say about the Wrangler 4D stabiltiy system...
Here is the text (link below): Admittedly, the Wrangler isn’t intended to be a slalom runner or a speed demon, but performance was particularly hindered by stability control that cannot be defeated manually. The result was jerky progress through the cones, as though we were forcing the vehicle in a direction it didn’t want to go. “If you’re steering to avoid an obstacle,” one tester reported, “it suddenly countermands that and tries to go straight ahead. It’s as if it turns the wheels to straight ahead for you.”
The result? “You clobber the obstacle, but you won’t roll over.” We suppose that’s okay, as long as you’d rather be forced to hit that deer than take a chance on rolling your Jeep. That’s what you’re supposed to do, right?
