Some of the guys that work for me are always getting taken by buying fake carbon fiber parts so I was showing them some web data about how to tell plastic from real carbon fiber (including the fact that GM will paint exposed carbon fiber with paint that costs $69,000/Gal. ((yes!)) to protect it from ultraviolet breakdown) and I ran across this from Top Gears James May: my.IS - Lexus IS Forum - TopGear's James May on carbon fiber
which tickled me.
Yeah, but CF is pretty bling. Nothing wrong with bling if that's what you want. Even Porsche says that (I read it in a thread here somewhere where the factory said buy all the bling you want!)
I guess if you are a seller of real or fake you really want it to be a "must". My poor Mexican employees really get taken sometimes with $300 plastic Honda wings that look kind of like the pictures of CF you see. However I wouldn't be surprised if some of us had made some fake CF purchases as well.
Santa Fe: Did the CF mirror inserts on eBay that some cayman clubbers bought for $144 have anything to do with this thread? They're real, and exposed to the sun, so they'll need to be painted with that $69k per gallon paint. Fortunately, 2 oz. ought to do it.
No, I'd forgotten about them. My guys who make $12/hr spent a bunch of money on parts that are advertised as CF. Probably be better as plastic anyway but for half the price.
Where do you get that paint I wonder...not that my guys will need it.

Two things happen to the resin that is used when making "carbon fiber" parts. It turns yellow, and it loses it's strength. 29% of it's strength in 1000 hours of peak UV time (noon at the equator). May God Bless Al Gore.
Anything that will protect it from UV will delay the process. Some say Aero 303. Others say "wax it". I have used Aero 303 on a kayak and have had good luck with it.
I am still trying to figure out what is best for my Strosek wing. The mirror inserts are disposable.
Is there an easy way to tell a good glass/plastic copy from real CF? Backstory; empoyee is wanting to buy some Honda front end pieces from a third party who got them from someone who got them from someone from California so they must be real, right? Photos that they showed me looked very realistic but I could find no web answers to any reliable "test" for the inexperienced. I guess if they believe that may be enough.
