I'm coming over to the US for a months holiday in 3 weeks time, picking up an RV in Denver and returning out of Denver, need to purchase a navigation GPS,
after leaving the US i will have no use for it, so what is the best rent one or buy? if i buy what would a good price be, and would the airport be the best place to buy? and what model for the short time we are in the US.
No idea about renting one; many rental cars have them. One of the cheapest to buy that I know about is the Garmin Nuvi 200 for about $169. I have seen them at West Marine (a boating store) and Best Buy (a large electronics outlet, found almost everywhere). Both have websites.

And if you rent one from the rental car companies, they typically charge ~$10/day for a portable GPS unit. You could also buy one and later on buy the maps for Australia.

I once asked the members of Cayman Club in a poll which GPS they would recommend in a poll and the Garmin units were the most recommended. I bought a Nuvi 750 and it's been awesome. The 200 is their entry level series but the software and navigating hardware is essentially the same, it doesn't have the bells and whistles which are really not necessary anyways (multi-destination routing, MSN/FM traffic integration). I would definitely go with the basic Garmin Nuvi unit and hold on to it for future travels, you can get maps for pretty much any (developed) destination in the world.

I wouldn't buy one at the airport - even if available - likely overpriced. In addition to Best Buy, Walmart also carries Garmin and Tom-Toms at a reasonable price.
Did you check with the RV Rental agency itself to see if they can equip the RV or provide a loaner?

Have Gramin and it's great. I do believe you can update maps etc from the internet. MAybe it can be updated for use in OZ. Check them out on the internet. My Garmin was only $350.00 US and I know thay have some less expensive models.

Off topic, but related. I fly the garmin G1000 on a diamond DA40 and it has an amazing GPS unit on it. You fly the airplane on top of the magenta line. It also has synthetic vision so you can fly in IMC with no vis and land. It even puts the runway on the screen. You fly through the boxes in the sky to land. Just awesome...
What does it all mean basil?
Garmin basically is rock star. When they start out with a unit, they continue to upgrade it and provide lots of free updates etc. I would recommend a Garmin unit any day..

If you are prepared to enter specific addresses for your destinations, the GPS capability in all current cell phones works suprisingly well. But, it will not give you local area information on parks, restaurants, gas stations, RV sites, etc.
