BMW has done it again. Same engine winning the Int'l Engine of the Year award twice in a row?? How come Porsche never wins anything? Isn't the boxer engine good enough? Or have they not been spending R&D $ and if not sooner or later it will lose competitiveness, won't it?
the flat-6 engine should at least win an award for its intoxicating note, but i thought it sounded like a diesel when I started it up the first time. flat engines are not unique tho, subaru also have a trademark flat-4 engine.
variocam is not unique either.
lots of other engines are technically better, eg Audi and BMW engines, BMW arguably has the best engine

not impersonating an expert just throwing something out there,
do you think it has to do with the horsepower per litre numbers? bmw's performance models 335, m3 pump out 100 hp per litre making their engine more efficient ( in the respect of getting the most hp out of the smallest size ). just a thought, be gentle if i've completely over generalized what could turn out to be an inconsequential stat

The 2.7L is engine of the year in my book. Over 90 HP/L and 74 ft-lb/L from a normally aspirated motor that is returning 30 MPG on the highway.
The motor in the civic Si (always high in the power/size list) produces more hp/L but less torque/L and the BMW motor in the 128i is down on hp/displacement and torque/displacement.
