I was talking to my neighbor who is a huge Audi fan and we were discussing the R8. He was considering buying one but said the local dealer wasn't getting one. He doesn't use the internet much so I told him I'd see if I saw any online. Well I checked Ebay and there are 2, both about $25k over sticker (ouch). So I also checked the Audi website and while you can spec out the R8, you cannot contact a dealer about one, or request a quote on one (the quote form greys out the submit button if you try to request a quote on the R8 - works for other models).
Does anyone here have any experience with purchasing / spec'ing out the R8? What's the "secret" that I can pass on to my neighbor?

I got the call last week to come in and spec mine this week...had me deposit there since Jan '07....I hit the top of the list here...If I order now delivery will be late Aug-early Sept....but I'm likely going to pass for a couple of reasons...If you have specific questions about specing the car let me know.. I'm sure I can get the answers.

Find out who the top Audi dealers are in the nation and start with them, since this will determine which dealers get first picks on the available allocations for the R8.
This is how I come to terms with dealers for cars that are not mass produced. The available allocation is key, I presume the Audi dealers are not the top sellers in your area do not have any.
I was also interested in the R8, and my dealer in MD mentioned I could get one within the year, I placed this call during March of 2007. On top of that, you will most likely have to part with a significant deposit for them to even consider you for a realistic delivery. They get many calls a day about this car, mine required a 10K deposit and I would have been third on the list, which was the last spot available for delivery within a year. I decided to pass on it because I could not wait that long for a car, since by that time the Nissan GT-R was going to steal my heart away from the Audi.
I have to admit, the R8 is one beautiful car and stands out like no other. Searching on ebay may only yield "used" cars, which could be fine if you do not care about that and only want the car. There are some with very low miles <1000 which probably belong to a "flipper" who wants to get rid of it and turn a profit.
Good luck!

They got just 2 allotments in Hawaii, one sold and another on the way. The price is $40k over msrp. Totally ridiculous! Their is only 1 dealership here, so no competition. I heard that the 1st model allocations for the US are sold out, but alot of people are awaiting the next model with the larger engine. So if your neighbor really wants one of the 1st model and wants it right away, the 2 you found on ebay are probably the way to go.

Aka Wani = Red Croc
Formely known as "The Kloser".
I've mentioned in a couple other threads on the R8 that at my local dealer, buying three cars previously wasn't enough to get on the "list." No dollar amount was mentioned but I think the folks getting one from them have already bought RS and S cars, A8's, etc, my lowly TT's and A3's weren't enough revenue. They are a big dealer, I think my salesman there said they got two in calendar year 2007 and will get four this year and have over a dozen customers wanting them, so they are currently taking no more deposits. Personally I think supply and demand will meet in the next year or so and at that time anyone will be able to order one and expect it in a reasonable amount of time. For now the R8 is an "It" car and you either get lucky buying one at MSRP or pay the flippers for one without waiting.

Called Rockville Audi and spoke to Andrew. Said they have already sold their allocation and have a waiting list which is now four years out based on allocation. I find that hard to believe since no car mfr. would commit to a model line up that far out....at least IMO. Two years out....sure. Four....nah. Not even the Cayman made it four years without a change.
I love the car, cannot afford it...but love it. But the mere idea of leaving a deposit for that long, AND waiting a year or more, plus mark ups.....totally crazy. More power to him!

I haven't had the chance to drive one yet, none locally, we couldn't even get one for the radio show, my neighbor swears by them (he gets audi publications in the mail). I saw DaveN007's review but it sounds like he didn't get a chance to really unwind one at the track. I would be curious to see how it compared to a Cayman as a weekend warrior car. Could it be a daily driver and a blast at the track on weekends? Obviously the trunk space is less than the Cayman so it is less "practical" and I know some folks have a concern about its poor gas mileage, especially with the TDI likely coming at some point. Tony Stark drives one though... If they were nice enough I'd get one if they came in yellow... wouldn't that be cool?

This is the guy to talk to about buying a new Audi R8. Their dealership sells all cars at MSRP including R8's. The dealership is in Palo Alto, CA. Chris seems to be the salesman with all of the right connections. I met him at the ALMS races last week, while I was being entertained by Audi USA with full VIP privileges, including full access to the Audi pits during the ALMS race. Great fun! Several other people have also recommended the guy. I drove him around the race course a few times between the different race group qualifications. (BTW I didn't get my R8 from him. Nor did I order mine. My dealer, who also sells at only MSRP, had filled the build order themselves before I ever talked to them. Thats how I got my car in only 2 months.)
