The 3,000 mile oil change interval, IMO, grew out of the inferior grade of oil filters that are all over the market. Any of the spin-ons can be cut open and inspected to see what I mean.
I used to be in the auto parts business, and I did that very same thing to many of the competitor's filters. In one specific instance, it appeared to lead to an oil distributor recommending oil changes at every 3,000 miles. The oil didn't have a problem; the filter just wasn't too safe beyond that limit.
A quality filter and a reputable brand of detergent oil should make it through 6,000 miles in almost any driving conditions, excepting dusty conditions or severe driving habits - starting, stopping, real short trips, no warm ups, etc. Basically, if the car isn't abused, 3,000 miles is an over kill. Especially on all Porsche engines other than a 356/912. ( Racing is another issue altogether ).
And synthetics can go about double that of conventional oils.
