i think porsche should worry about building faster cars than trying to discredit others. it's sad when nissan, GM, chrysler are the biggest bullys in germanys playground.
No surprise here. Honda did something similar with the S2000, not at the 'Ring but in putting a fleet of 'special' cars onto the magazine boys, who bought it all hook line and sinker.

Sources? I followed the S2000 from the very beginning, and never heard of any such scandal or saw any artificially enhanced performance results. Heck, the engine is so highly tuned that the aftermarket can't get much more power w/o going w/ forced induction.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit. I too think Porsche should concentrate a bit more on building faster cars, but sometimes you just have to call out the guy with the dubious claim. I'm prone to think Nissan turned up the boost a bit, tweaked the suspension, or used some different tires.
What I would really like to see is all three cars being gone over thoroughly by an un-biased party making sure they are all in bone stock form straight off the showroom floor. Then put them on the track and test them,.....same day, same drivers, then different drivers. Only then will we know the truth.

I disagree. BS is BS and Porsche can't afford to chase phantoms playing by different rules or no rules at all.

Porsche's cars are plenty fast if you're willing to pay up for them. What I like about Porsche is that they meld high performance w/ durability, reliability, comfort, and everyday usability perhaps better than any other mfg...you just have to pay a big premium for it!
I'm not so sure that coming out w/ faster and faster cars is a great move in this environment. Instead, I'd like to see them focus on better performance (and efficiency) via weight reduction.

I agree, only fair way to do it.

I'll have to drag out my old car magazines, but what I recall is this - when the car was introduced, all the mags were getting 0-60 times in the low 5's, maybe even 5 flat. Then a year or so later it was tested again for some comparison test or other, and the 0-60 was now in the high 5 second range.
When I actually test drove a 2002 model early this year (20k miles), it felt like a 5.8 second or so car to me, roughly what my 2.7 Cayman is. Now, this car was being offered at $17k, and was a bargain for the performance it had. If it hadn't been for the very stiff ride, the claustrophobic cabin, and the tiny trunk, I would likely have bought it.
That's what I remember anyway, and maybe that isn't a big deal, but I've never known Porsche to play that game.
