Just in time for a long holiday weekend: The National Motorists Association released a list of the top-ten speed trap cities in the country.
The National Motorists Association issued a warning yesterday to holiday weekend travelers urging them to avoid or use caution when driving through the ten cities most notorious for speed traps. 'Nothing can ruin a vacation more quickly than an undeserved speeding ticket,' explained Eric Skrum, the group's communications director.
The top-ten list of speed trap cities was created with data from the SpeedTrap Exchange, a site that identifies locations that combine arbitrarily low speed limits with heavy traffic enforcement designed to raise revenue. The top-ten cities are as follows:
I am surprised to see Austin listed. I live in Austin, and I almost never see cops doing radar checks. The speed enforcements for the day are even printed in the paper every morning so you can see where they will be. I've never gotten a ticket in Austin, so maybe the price is steep. Drove my Corvettes in Austin as daily drivers for five years and never got a ticket. My Cayman arrives in two weeks, so I hope nothing has changed.
Escort Radar
At ESCORT, we're continually improving our line of radar and laser detectors with the best technology. Our latest invention, the GPS-powered PASSPORT 9500ix, is no exception. It provides the best long-range protection against every known radar and laser gun in use in North America, but also incorporates GPS accuracy to silence each and every false alert. It is by far the most intelligent, fully automatic radar and laser detector ever designed. You drive. It learns. End of story. http://www.escortradar.com
I grew up in the Detroit suburbs. I suspect the article is referring to the 5 Gross Pointes. I had been pulled over as a kid there 3 times in a period of ten days, doing between 2 and 4 miles over the 25mph limit. Things have not changed much in 30 years.
Agree with yz250 on Austin, Texas as being somewhat overemphasized as speed trap. Yes, there are postings in daily newspapers and on TV as to where traffic controls can be expected,. Theproblem is that once you leave city limits and drive thru outskirts, West Lake Hills and Rollingwood police departments are know to be extra alert... probably because so many people speed onBee Caves Road through those small cities. We use Bee Caves Road a lot, and observe that, perhaps, more police shoudl be used to slow down the traffic, and speed limits are already almost too high.
Houston has a number of extra sneaky speed traps around downtown, I've seen numerous places where they're on foot, hiding behind mailboxes or pillars with just the gun sticking out and then they step into oncoming traffic to stop people for 35+ in a 30 right off of a freeway.
