Elise bashing

Hey it's fun to sling mud sometime. I'm sure the Lotus Elise has it's merits but:

A friend of mine has anElise and ribs me about my tank of a 'sports car',as compared to his light weight, agile and REAL sports car. I need some ammo to shoot this fool down please. Aside from what I perceived which is a bare bones aluminum floored non-comfy buckboard that requires champion limbo skills ora hoist to get in and out.

(I started this in another Off Topic thread but didn't want to hijack. I copied responses received there below -- but this guy is persistent and argumentative (you know the type) -- I need more). -Steve

Sounds like you are holding your own pretty well. Ever sit in a Europa? Ever eat sardines?

My wife thinks the Elise looks like an insect. I think the design won't age very well such as the Countach. UGLY!

SJD - ask him about fit and finish, ressale value, crash worthiness, everyday driving, etc. I was up close and personal with one last weekend and it seems like more of a fair weather car to me - you might get sick of it after a while... Edited by - Archer993 on 07/06/2006 5:02:36 PM

The Elise and Exige are amazing performance machines. A true enthusiasts car for sure. Bare bones track tools. If only we could get the 111S over here in the U.S.

However, I prefer the Cayman as an overall package.

As I said, no doubt the Elise has it's merits. And on second thought, while it's fun to poke fun, what I need are solid arguments of Cayman merits over the Elise. A good start already, anyway...

All in good fun, this is a buddy, sort of...

Do you know why you don't see a lot of Elises on the road? It's because the most of the guys that can afford one can't get in and out of it (this includes me). And, once you're in, it's not too comfy. A fun car for a young man, but very little functionality. The look is a little Too Fast Too Furious for me, especially in neon orange. I ask you, would you want to do a 300 mi road trip in your buddy's go-cart?

Fadiboy,

You said a mouthful for sure. I saw one parked out in front of my bank just yesterday and I cannot imagine how anyone but a child can get in and out without hurting themselves. It is a cute car even if it is 'bug-like'.

In my opinion, when you know you are right and they are dead wrong (and all of us in the Cayman Club know we are driving the best balanced sports car in the world) it's not even worth arguing. Next time he wants to Cayman bash, just smile and say 'yea, sure dude' and drop it. It will incense him to no end, and you will be comfortably happy knowing you are right. Hey, you are driving the most admired and envied make on the planet. 'What, me worry?' Not on your life!

Ask him to go over to Elisetalk.com and read the horror story of the guy whos Elise warranty was cancelled by Lotus because they had determined that he'd done more than 3 clutch dumps (standing starts) within the first 10,000 miles. As anyone who has driven an Elise knows, that is the only way to get the car to get moving. There is a laundry list of things Lotus is using to deny warranty coverage to Elise owners, ifI owned one I'd think about bailing out. The bad news has traveled fast and resale values are plummeting (I see them in the upper 20's to lower 30's now!), the dealership closest to me has a dozen or more on the lot that they can't move. Should I go on?

Fun to drive? Yes. Worth the headaches (and backaches) No!

When I purchased my Cayman, I was a bit enticed by the Elises and the Exige on the lot. I read online that if you don't get the touring package, you can see the glue that holds the body panels on. I read about tons of issues that people have had with them. It was enough to dissuade me from purchasing the Elise.

On the same tires, the Cayman S is faster than an Elise or Exige

BTW - I own an Elise and it is my dedicated track car. It is more fun than the Cayman, but the Cayman is faster.
