Most likely the E90 M3 will be bigger than the E46 M3 thus negating the V8. It will not be faster than the M6 so I assume it will run in the 13s for 1/4 mile times.

We have had a black camouflaged M3 E90 wandering around Palos Verdes, CA for the last week. It is pretty large, with enhanced wheel well arches etc, and a pretty aggressive rear valance to house the two sets of twin tips on each side, compared to the older model. Looks pretty mean.

<div id="post_message_487">Say, pit it against the current 996 Turbo...
The current 996's weight is 3480 lbs. with 415 bhp, 0-60 in 4.1 secs.
So my shoot-from-the-hip guess is Bangle's M3 would probably weigh around 300 lbs. lighter (guessing based on the 330i's weight of 3362 lbs. and the amount of CFRP the M3 will probably utilize). And with 400 bhp, this could come close, but not beat, the 0-60 of the 996 since it's 4WD and the M3 most likely won't be.
My prediction on the 0-60: somewhere between 4.1 and 4.4 seconds.

Hmm, I have to disagree, part of the reason for BMW's fall from sportscar grace is that they can't stay away from the cookie jar. Look for this M3 toweigh more than the 91tt, the 330i and the E46M3. I would expect times around 4.6 seconds to the quarter. As a long time BMW owner I'm more excited about the 1 series than the M3. Less can be more which is what makes the Cayman such a better car than the 911.
Anybody remember the first E30 M3s? How about the 2002tii or 2002 Turbo? Light, nimble, fast, and a lot of fun to toss around.HPalone isn't the answer to sports car fulfillment. The BMWs are becoming more and more like the Mercedes AMGs----lots of power and.......??????
Agreed with you guys on this!!! The 135i prob more fun to drive! Essence of a sport car is communicative steering+feel. Alsonimble chassiswith adequate power! The Cayman S got all these virtues in abundance!!!!
There are still few sporty cars out there that have been able to resist bloat from one generation to another - Porsches have been not too bad, but even they have grown in size - could that reflect the increase in general public average size - which of course brings up the question - has the general size of people increased in all countries or just the better off, and does that drive the car size. Mind you the US cars from the 50s and 60s were VERY large ;-)
No car company, including Porsche and BMW, can afford to exclude larger folks from fitting in their cars. Now an NBA forward or an NFL lineman will not fit in the Cayman IMO (that's why they build Escalades and Range Rovers), but the average plus-size Joe s/b able to fit in a car put out to the general market. Witness the Lotus Elise/Exige. Very cool cars that require insructions from your yoga guru to fold into. Do you think if it was as easy to use as the Cayman that here wouldn't be a lot more on the road for $15K less than a CS? Typically, the guys who can spring for the sticker on these types of cars have a few miles on them and a spare tire to lug; even if the car doesn't. (Russ, of course I do not mean you )
