I was in Grade 6 in 1969, when our local station was going to take Star Trek off the air (or it was going to be cancelled, don't remember which) - anyhow a bunch of us wrote to the station...
'Star Trek: The Original Series is a science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry and aired between September 8, 1966 to June 3, 1969, with a total of 79 episodes produced. Although cancelled after its short run, the program was placed in syndication and spawned a strong fan following.'
My friends and I recently completed a Star Trek marathon: watched every movie first then every single episode of TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Took a few months but we did it. My friend's getting the original series set so we're going to watch that too. Waiting for the animation DVD set if there is any.

Depending on which Star Trek we're talking about would influence my answer. If it Captain Picard, then Star Trek and if its Captain Kirk, then Star Wars. How's that for complicated?
Which captain was the best captain? Kirk of course. He had it all but I give credit to Picard, Janeway, and Archer for being the kind of captains they were to their crews. I wasn't impressed with Sisko though.

I liked Sisko and I wish they would have done a DS9 movie and brought him back from the place he went to. Sisko was tough but also a good father (something you didn't see with other captains) and was thrust into the position without much say and happened to be located at the central focus point for the whole Dominion conflict. I thought the last 2-1/2 years of DS9 were some of the best Star Trek episodes of all time.
September 8, 2006 will be the 40th anniversary of Star Trek"s 1966 debut on NBC. Live Long and Prosper seems rather appropriate especially for TV land.
For me its Star Trek and Capitan Kirk. He gets the babes and was always a little tongue in cheek, where as Picard played it a little too serious for me (although I certainly respect and enjoyed Picard's potrayal of a star ship capitan also ). Star Wars is way too over the top in glitz and glamor for me, and really never tried to address social issues.
