In another thread under 'Chat' we were discussing an article in the current 'Excellence' magazine which seemed to imply that Porsche wants to enter the Panamera in NASCAR events. We could not decide if the article was tongue in cheek or not. Regardless, do you fellow Caymanites feel this would be a fruitful endeavor or a big mistake for Porsche?
It would probably help them sell more cars and make more money, which appears to be Porsche's sole motivation these days. But I have such a deep hatred of Nascar and the stupid freak show it has become (not to mention the ridiculous direction Porsche has gone the last few years), that I would seriously consider not being a Porsche owner any more. My enthusiasm for Porsche is already waning right now just because of the cayenne and panamera. Nascar would be the last straw.
My feeling is that if that is what Porsche has to do to stay independent, then so be it. I agree that NASCAR is a joke. However, if Porsche were to enter that sport, maybe it would draw Mercedes and a few other makes, and NASCAR might turn into something better. I have been a Porsche fanatic for close to 40 years, to me it is an important aspect of who I am and what makes me happy. I have seen Porsche on the brink of destruction a couple of times and for me it was a very scary issue. I love seeing them in suchtremendous financial shape and I feel the direction they are moving, like it or not, will keep them solvent for years to come. That's just my humble opinion.
P-nut, NASCAR is decidedly upscale. A NASCAR race car is an amazing machine. These cars speed around the track at speeds equal to almost anything that european circuits can throw up. Wouldn't we love to see Porsche have a proving ground like this? DO you think for a minute Porsche would settle for anything less than the podium? Right now, a lot of NASCAR fans don't know what a Porsche is (well, they know what one is, but don't have an appreciation for it). What do you think NASCAR publicity will do to the resale value of your CS, 997, Boxster, etc.? It will bring a whole new group to the market that will buoy resale prices for quite some time. I say bring it on. I don't think the article was tongue in cheek as I read it. If you consider the dollars involved, you will realize that this is a very serious proposition. I understand your concern, though, as I have been in the infield at Dover years ago. It's Mardi-gras on turf. Which ain't bad, but hardly a concours event. Any event featuring topless women scores OK in my book though. Lastly, could you imagine taking a stock Monte Carlo to the track? Of course not. Porsches are almost race cars as they sit on the showroom floor. It would follow then that a lot more of the race inspired innovation would find its' way back to the average Porsche. So celebrate the possibility as it can only be a positive development. Dave
Although I don't follow NASCAR I think people have this redneck misconception of it. If Porsche wants to go NASCAR there's nothing we can do to change their mind. If it benefits both parties good for us.

I wanna be on the pit crew! where do I sign up! Lowenbrau could be the sponsor, as they have sponsored many a Porsche in the past. We are ready for Talladega!
I find it hard to believe Porsche would really consider doing this, but then I felt the same way when they got into Indy car racing back in the 80s. I would hope Porsche would revive a factory sports car effort first. I feel it would really be further dilution of the brand and would make me more upset than when they came out with the Cayenne.
I realize NASCAR has a very diverse audience right now, but I think most people who watch NASCAR know what Porsches are and don't see it as a car that belong in 'Working Man's Racing.' They would also say something like why would you spend all that money when my Camaro (insert Mustang or any american muscle car here) will beat it in a drag race.
I'm not a big fan of NASCAR and wish it was more like the Aussie V8 Supercar Series. The cars being raced in NASCAR, which is suppossed to represent something theaverage personcan buy, doesn't represent anything. Where can you buy a V8 powered, rear wheel drive Taurus, 500, or what ever else they represent. The Aussie series is run on road courses and street circuits and is very exciting to watch. And even though they are dedicated race cars,if they run a V8 rear wheel drive car they better offer it to the public.
I'm not a Nascar fan. I am not even an auto racing fan. I can't stand watching the cars zoom around the track waiting for an accident or a pit error. It's worse than watching soccer in my book. Give me the NFL or SEC football anyday for sports. What ever the reason is though, and it's beyond me, NASCAR is where the money is. I have a client that as a side light made wraps for headers and sleeves for ignition leads. They didn't move a whole lot of them. Then they got them into a a couple of NASCAR cars and now it's 60% of their business. Who knew? Heckler, I understand your concern, but Porsche is not likely to cheapen the brand by entering NASCAR. I don't think you will soon see a GT3 painted up like the General Lee. (Wait a minute, ......would that look cool? Photoshop guys, help me out..)
I thought they have already started the qualifiers on the streets of Manhattan. Taxi Cabs vs. Porsche Just kidding.....
To race in NASCAR you need a iron block v-8, push rod engine and a carburetor, and run leaded gasoline. For many years the cars have only been a passing resemblance to a street car in name only. Yes there is a lot of appeal for nascar, but do people now go out and buy a Monte Carlo because it won a race?
Porsche has built off road vehicles from the very early years, they have also built tractors just like Lamborghini.

NASCAR has now become BASHCAR. I used to be a fan but now it's just silly to watch. All they do is ride around the track in one big bunch getting mad at each other and banging into each other on purpose. Formula 1 open wheeled racing on the hand along with the GT racing still requires a high degree of skill to win and finish a race. You don't want to touch wheel to wheel and my gosh you have to be able to turn the steering wheel in both directions. The announcing on BASHCAR is also just plain moronic. 'He wants to use long gears now to conserve fuel.' Please explain to me how he has changed his gear ratios mid lap? Oh you mean he wants to up shift at lower rpm to conserve fuel? 'Diggity, diggity, diggitylet's go racing boys.' Another classic line. If Porsche enters it for marketing reasons I don't care. They won't be racing anything remotely resembling a Porsche or have a single Porsche component in the car, they'll just be a sponsor. I'd be surprised if they think being a sponsor will increase their sales by a single car.
So NASCAR is where the money is...so? Pro wrestling is where the money is too. Shall we support it?
NASCAR has become sheer entertainment. Roller derby on4 wheels. Rigged races. Planned stunts. If Porsche goes anywhere near it, they will be ridiculed. And it may not hurt the resale on my Cayman but it most certainly will not help it.
