"You cannot stop Martin Winterkorn, you can only hope to contain him. As of yesterday, that is. As of today, he is (possibly) in full blitz mode. The boys at motorauthority.com are reporting that Porsche, as the largest shareholder in the Volkswagen Group, is about to spin Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti off into a Ford style PAG group sans Ford."
In other words Porsche to cherry pick VAG ?
Porsche to sell you anything from a Alloy TT to a Bugatti?
Yeah, I would have to say it would be a poor use of resources. All of those are nice brands, but no mass delivery system. If you bought VW it would make more sense as the volume would help with costs for parts sourcing and allow or greater return on R&D dollars (euros). I may be proven wrong, but would have to say that this rumor looks to be a non-starter.
What are you guys talking about?
Porsche is currently the largest single shareholder of VW. F.Piech, whose family has a controling interest in Porsche, is the president of the supervisory board of VW. He has just ousted B.Pischetsrieder, from the VW CEO position, and has replaced him with M.Winterkorn, former Audi CEO who has had a great success at that job.
Porsche is trying to remove the veto rights at the shareholder level of VW that the state of Lower Saxony has (second biggest single shareholder), through a deposition at the European court. If successful, Porsche would have a controlling stake in VW, and could do with the VW group whatever it wanted.
So for all practical purposes, Porsche already controls VW and all its brands.
To form a Premier Auto Group, similar to that formed by Ford a few years back, is just a form of corporate restructuring. Also it is a way to isolate underperforming entities (namely VW) to make it easier to deal with the trade unions while they undergo a cost cutting period.
Cheers,
wurlie
The Bentley brand (with assistance from Audi) is kicking some serious butt, is making money for the first time ever, and is back ordered on everyting but the Arnage. Lamborghini is doing OK as well, again with assistance from Audi. I have no problem with Porsche driving the bus at VW---they are good business people.
Ford Group's track record and current status isn't exactly an inspiration is it?
True enough, but, unlike Ford, Porsche may know what it is doing and Porsche ownership may enhance the brand image of the VW stable, even the well known luxury makes.
There is no inherent sequential move up from Ford, to Volvo, to Jaguar or Aston Martin, but there certainly could be in a Porsche controlled VW, both in a sedan range and a sports car range.
This is bad for consumers. What do you think will happen to the Audi R8 if Porsche takes over Audi? Won't they pull a Cayman and force Audi to detune the R8 so it won't compete with the 911? We'd be forced to go outside the Porsche/Audi family to get a good value on a mid-engine car. I'm hoping the Japanese car makers will make one soon. More competition is good for consumers.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Never gonna happen. You're talking about completely different vehicles being "manufactured" by different factories(read: companies) regardless of how much share Porsche has in it. Also, how many good mid-engined cars are out there? Actually, good or bad, I don't know of all that many. If you're willing to go Japanese, that would be your choice. I for one love the feel and performance of German vehicles, not the uber efficient Japanese appliances.

Porsche marketing doesn't care where the car is manufactured. As far as product mix is concerned, the two definitely do compete with each other. I just saw the cover of the latest EVO magazine at the bookstore with a picture of the Audi R8 on the cover and the big letters "Target 911".
