Ferrari v Porsche as a day to day car?

Think Porsche would walk this one no trouble, but i hear that Ferrari have had to lift their game because of (VW owned ) Lambo.

Is a Ferrari usable day to day.....eg say 8,000 miles a year.....or still "Fun days only".

Sure it is. However, you will pay for it in maintenance costs.

$1500 for an oil change...ouch.

I think as engine design improves and the ability to machine parts to tighter tollerances with the aid of computers, they are lasting longer more reliably. I would say reliability would be on the list, but not first as to why you wouldn't drive a Ferrari as a daily driver. Where are you going to park it? How much are the consumable parts? Is your insurance rate based on mileage? Can you drive a $300,000 car to church? It's all a moot point though, as people who can afford $300M + cars usually have more than one and drive the Ferrari on days and duties that suit its' style. I'm afraid it's still relegated to weekend toy by its' very cost.

well the 430 seems to be most reliable and driveable F-car offered to date, especially with the move to timing chains from the 360 belts. This has brought that high price maintence down considerably. But still expect to pay a lot more for upkeep than a porsche and to get a whole lot more attention everywhere you go and wherever you park it. and they are wholely lacking any any creature comforts, which is great for a sports car but a little tiresome in a daily driver. they also take pretty big hits in resale if you crank the miles since most are so lightly driven. But if you don't care about these issues the cars themselves don't mind being driven as much as you want to...I've seen 360's with 80k on the clock and no real issues.

Thanks Guys!
Just wondering, back in the early 90's one bloke ran a 328 and it cost him £12,000 just in running costs!

Is it just me or am i seeing lots of Lambo's catching fire?

I have a friend in LA who was a Porsche guy for a long time. He then bought a series of Ferraris - the last being a 360 F1. He found that for most of the reasons cited above (where to park, put golf clubs, etc.), he really never drove it. When he did drive it around LA, it shook his fillings loose. The last straw was the new clutch that was needed at 12,000 miles - the bill was $11k. Now, mind you, this is a guy who has the money to buy whatever he wants - he is rich. He sold the car and now drives a Seal Gray 997-S Cab. He's much, much happier, he tells me.

I have a CS and E55, however my business partner have a Lambo Gallardo as daily driver, so far no problem. i guess at the end of the day, since we are all Car Freaks, regardless of all cost, if you love your car, you will drive it daily... but a lambo and a ferrari would be fun to drive daily.....

Russ,
The new Dino looks just like a Cayman. Have you seen the pictures?

Not going to happen:

Ferrari Cayman (Dino)

It's true - Ferrari has no reason to go low-end on their cars. It only devalues their brand name.

Also...
I have always loved Ferraris too, but long ago I decided that Porsche was my favorite car. This is mainly because I remember the days of the Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512, the 917 Can-Am cars, and the Porsche Tag-Heuer(sp?) F1 cars. When push came to shove, Porsche could clean Ferrari's clock, and probably still can if they were to compete on a large scale. To me this equated to superior technology and thus my greater affection for Porsches. Whether this is actually true or not, I really don't know.

I remember when they wouldn't start in the wet....I think the F430 is far more reliable now though, but I wouldn't consider ANY Ferrari as a daily driver.

That's the beauty of a Porsche. It can function as a true daily driver if you choose, and still tear it up on the track.
