Atherton: LMP1 not dead.

American Le Mans Series CEO Scott Atherton has insisted that the future of the championship's premier class is not in doubt, despite Dyson Racing's shock switch to LMP2 with Porsche.

While I find the ALMS a great series with some of the best road race drivers in the world, and have the opportunity to go to the Petite LeMans every year since I live all of 20 minutes from the track, LMP1 is dead, along with GT1, but LMP as arisen from the dead to save the series.

It's been a privilege to see the Audi and BMW LMP machines over the last 8 years run at Road Atlanta.

As great as LMP1 and GT1 cars are to watch - nothing like an LMP car going through turn 12, there just isn't enough competition to make it worthwhile. The cost that Audi, Corvette, and recently Aston Martin (for how long?) have raised the ante, no privateer in thier right mind is going to spend that kind of money to be the best non factory car on the track.

My bet is LMP2 is going to become a spec Porsche class, and GT2 is already a spec Porsche class............... hum................

Could be, except that Honda will have cars in LMP2 in 2007 and Ferrari will have two brand new Ferrari 430 GT Berlinettas for GT2. So not only will there be some competitive racing in 2007 but there will be some competitive manufacturers involved as well in LMP2 and GT2. So I don't think that LMP2 and GT2 are Porsche spec races....yet

I forgot about the Acura in LMP2 (but I think you have to credit Porsche for being the catalyst behind the Acura move), and had not heard about the 430GTs........ More competition is better - not much to say about getting a podium finish when there are only 4 cars in a class.
