B&M Short Shift Kit / EVO Link aka PITA

ok - so not that i expected it to be cake, or even jello (wiggly!), but installing the Short Shifter Kit/Link is a bizzatch.
biggest issue: removing that trim and console. holy ****. plastic prying tools essential, next time. although using an old credit card seemed to do the trick. *grumble* once the console is up it is just unscrew this and detach that cable, etc. we were actually able to get the boot and shift knob off, so no worries there.
she is sitting outside the house, all stripped down to the carpet with nowhere to go. guess we do not have to worry about theft much tonight as we have the shifter in the house. would have pushed her into the garage (a bit tight for working) but it is quite the slope. heavy!
help me (also posted on mod forum):
1. having issues getting the EVO link to slip onto the bottom of the stick/ball - any advice? i have the shift box in the freezer right now to contract the metal ball and was going to heat up the link a bit to expand. any tips for heating up the link? am using a rubber mallet with all of my strength and it won't budge.
2. once i have everything together and the shift box is back in the Cayman, can i drive her around for a bit to see about any adjustments before i put back all of the PITA trim/center console? was going to heat it up a bit on the highway to see how it goes. dangerous?
i will be re-assembling tomorrow after work, so replies on the quick side are bonus.
i hope i have not gone in over my head, as this is my first time on the inside of a shift box, or near a car with tools for that matter. i did the side markers last week, but that is a whistle compared to this.

Did you take pics along the way? I know we have some articles in our Articles section, but just thought you'd maybe take some for a follow up article. Personally I prefer the factory short shifter, a whole heck of a lot easier to install.

i did not take pictures up to this point as i was following pretty detailed instructions already up on the site - yours i believe! i will take a few pictures of the B&M assembly. it is all together now, and there is no way i can get it apart - heh. but will take pics and explain what i've done - super easy and about 2 steps. the hard part is getting that EVO link on.
should help someone a bit in any case, maybe. |
