March 29th AX Video

a bit better with keeping my hands on the wheel this time. there was plenty of run-off into the wildflowers, so i pushed Lottie a bit. lost the rear end on the one part of the course with Airport security cars lined up, of course.

must do something about that sound - video cam on order!

Looked like a fun course (though it seemed they made the finish a bit tricky) . . .

My observation regarding your hands: when I started autocross I was taught to shuffle steer (i.e. not cross-up your hands or wrists), in order to keep your hands as close to 3 and 9 o'clock on the wheel as possible. Occasionally, e.g. if you are correcting a skid you will have to spin the wheel a lot faster by crossing over.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this, and some might debate the point, but I am just relaying what very experienced and competitive autocrossers taught me. YMMV

hrm... i'll have to look that up in my Solo Racing book! so many things to do/think about at once. even if i do not spin the car, my head always ends up spinning a bit.

thanks!

I have no definitive knowledge, but on my Porsche DE day, the ex racing driver who put me through my paces said you initially start at 3/9 o'clock psitions and lock your hands there, so when in tight cornering you could end up crossing your hands. The reason for this was you always are holding the stearing wheel and if you should spin, you automatically know that but uncrossing your hands, your have tyhe wheel pointing straight, where as a shifting hands stearing technique does not allow you to imeadiately put the wheel back into neutral staright ahead position.

Just thought I would add that.

Starlight - interesting - i have noticed that there are more than a few schools of thought on where hands should be and if glued there or not. i am not sure if there is any definitive way.

DE and AX are different beasts, and there are subtleties that will take years and years to learn. i look forward to the practice! thanks for the info - i have a lot to think about...!

There's definite improvement as you go - that looks like fun!

I've done several DE's in the past (none with the CS yet, unfortunately) but never an AX.

For what it's worth, I'm of the 3 and 9 hand position with shuffle school as well, but there are certainly different techniques and I'm sure AX is it's own animal.

Keep us posted on your progress!
