finally put up the last videos for my Remus Install article - holy cow, that article took a LOT of time to create.

i am not Chuck mechanic, so everything i thought about writing brought up five new questions. (sometimes research can be terribly exponential.) new camera, new editing program, new people to work with, new exhaust.

i
am
exhausted.

and best yet, there have not been many comments. *sigh*

ok, enough of that.

Well, I for one was very impressed by the quality, breadth, and depth of your article - you make the rest of us look like rank amateurs.

One question though: with what, or how did you mic the exhaust?
(I'm still struggling with a way to capture that sound better on my track vids.)

i work at a production house, so i borrowed an external mic from one of the audio guys. it is an audio-technica stereo condenser (but i edited in mono.)

so i ended up taping this $400 microphone inside one of the bumper vents and laced the cord up through the trunk. the idea was to get as close to the tailpipe as possible while avoiding the heat or wind factors.

for AX i am using the mic wrapped in a towel in the storage compartment behind the driver seat. the one i recorded that way (not on youtube) sounds pretty rad.

Hmmm, maybe that's the problem - I've been using one of those el cheapo Radio Shack lapel mics as my remote mic - and it just doesn't seem up to the task.

Why does everything involving Porsches have to be so danged expensive?!

i'll ask the audio guys if there is an inexpensive, but quality mic for you - this just happened to be an "extra" he had (wtf?)

*walks over to the audio dept to ask*

look here - he said you should be able to get a pretty good Sony Stereo Condenser for ~$160

Thanks for the link Elise!

I decided to go with the $99 Sony mic which got decent reviews, and was available on Amazon for $76! We'll see how it works at my next track day . . . *fingers crossed*

I kept bugging you for your post on the exhaust, and then got too busy to read it when you did put it up for us! Whatta jerk...

I've got to say your write-up is very, very, very, very (OK, you get the point!) complete and informative.

All in all it's just great and the audio is extra cool. It sounds amazing and I'm sure you are oh so happy with it!

I'm looking forward to hearing a bunch of different exhaust systems at Croctoberfest next weekend, but I am going in mighty impressed with the Remus already!
