Murphy's law...

Posted 03-23-2008 at 06:43 PM by Itmerc
Well, The good news is I have my car and its driveable.

The bad news is the crate motor is probably going to have to go back for another one... Scott's been really busy these last 3 weeks so he wasn't able to get the modified X51 ECU program to Stephen until late afternoon on FRIDAY (with me waiting to pick the car up) so they couldn't do full diagnostics on the engine until right at the wire. Turns out the motor is throwing a code related to the Variocam system and if the issue hasn't gone away now that I've put a few hundred miles on the motor then Stephen will be pulling the motor and sending it back to Porsche for another one. Yea... I need to get the code cleared here in Houston so I can see if it comes back, if it does (and it probably will) then I'll be letting Stephen know so he can get another motor. ---Grumble---
The program Scott sent Stephen wasn't a fully tweaked out/final version so its also throwing an error because my car doesn't have the Porsche 997 'sport' exhaust which has an electronically controlled valve. Not a big deal and once he has time to fully tweak the file after the holiday weekend its a really quick procedure to load it, BUT not one I can do since I don't have the equipment. Since I'm pretty sure that we're going to have to swap the motor anyway it can just wait until I take it back to iA which will be as soon as they can get the NEW motor on hand.

The new motor is an altogether different beast than my old 3.4. COMPLETELY different! Louder, DEEPER, seems stronger across the board even with the questionable Variocam. Under light load/throttle the exhaust note from my full Milltek system (Cayman version) is deeper and a bit louder, but when rev'd/driven with 'intent'... HOLY SMOKES! Loud, strong, mean, LOUD! LOL! Since we're going to be putting on a custom catback when we do the body work we didn't put something different on right now but those of you considering an X51 swap should also definitely plan on mounting something other than a Cayman Milltek catback... It wasn't meant for this motor and it just resonates too much under moderate/heavy throttle.

Keeping in mind the questionable Variocam the motor seems to want higher revs than the 3.4 before it really comes 'alive' but even so it still seems to have more grunt across the board and even in the lower RPM range. I really haven't pushed it hard yet since I wanted to put some miles on it first so I can't really tell you how it pulls beyond highway speeds of 80 or so.
