California Car Duster

Does anyone use one of these? And are they really safeto use on the car and will not scratch it. The dealer here said it is the best thing between washes.

I use the small one to dust the interior. I have the large one also, but have been using the Kozak Auto Drywash cleaning and polishing cloth to dust the exterior. It dry dusts without scratching and leaves a shine on the paint. It works very well removing the dust that kicks up on the rear from a spirited drive.

So are you concerned about the duster for the outside?

One thing to be cautious of is that they are impregnated with wax. I made the mistake of using it once on a black car that had been in the sun....streak city, as the heat of the car melted the wax.

It was easy enough to clean off, but I have learned my lesson.

I have used one for years on my black 911, and will also use it on the CS. I have seen no evidence of scratching as long as you use it to remove light dust, and not heavy dirt.

I use one every night between washes. I also wash the car every weekend, and wax it every other week, so maybe there is enough protectant on the car to avoid the scratches.
I don't think it has any wax

+1... I use one all the time, and have for years on my black cars - but Brian is right - they have wax on them to pick up the dust and you don't want to use it on a black or dark-colored car after it's been in the sun or is sitting in the sun. The dirtyer the duster gets, the better it works. And, use for light dust only - if the car is really dirty, the dirt, not the duster will scratch the car. Every year I've been to the Porsche Parade oncours (and Pebble Beach, for that matter) I see it used by most of the contestants to dust off their cars just before judging - good enough recommendation for me - I can't imagine anyone like that using something that would scratch their cars.

I had gotten a free one a few years ago and used it pretty often on a previous car. I worked quite well until it got dirty. The one thing I was told as far as using it was to not apply pressure (even its own weight) when using it or you will start getting scratches.

Used one for years on my speed yellow 986S never had a problem. Got my BLACK 987S, had a deep scratch within a month. I was told by the detailer not to use them on dark colored cars. I always shook it out real good before and after, no downward pressure when using, but still got the scratch.

I use a microfiber duster from Griot's Garage, which does not contain any wax and leaves no streaks behind yet picks up minor dust particles. Also, only use it for minor dust particles, as soon as the dust is very visible, wash the car to avoid scratching it by dragging the dust particles all over the finish.

I've used one for years as well. Although I have noticed that there will be some small scratches from them...As well as the guys at Zaino telling me they don't recommend because of the fine scratches....although using the polish gets rid of them......

I've used one for years too. They work great as long as the car is just a little dusty. I use it much more in the summer down here in Texas where we may go a couple weeks w/o rain. Using the duster and some quick detailer spray (& keeping it covered at work), I've kept my car looking just washed for up to 2 weeks.

I use the "dash duster" for the interior... works great.

As for the exterior, if there's a light coating of non-abrasive dust I think it would work okay... but where I live the coastal rainforest climate pretty much means that when the car's dirty it's because it's been driven in the rain. The only way to clean it is to wash it.

These dusters work best on a nearly-clean car. Shaking them creates an electric charge that picks up the dust. I was told never to let the duster get wet. It may have some effect on its performance, but would certainly cause streaks. Additionally, if the car is well-waxed, the duster works better, and there is less chance of scratches. I usually use the duster just before I put the cover back on the car. 987f
