I cannot take credit for this, it came from Detailers Paradise
If you want to know when its time to claybar your car, put a baggie over your fingertips and run it across the paint. Your fingers will be more sensitive to feel the imperfections (e.g., like from pollution). If its smooth as a baby's bottom ... no need to claybar.

Do you mean draging the baggie across the paint, or baggie stationary on the paint and draging your fingers across the baggie???
j_copeland, you gotta wrap your finger in the baggie and run your finger across your paint, just as you would even if there was no baggie to check for smoothness.

Thanks for the tip, I have always wondered about the claybar. I keep reading threads about using it but never quite knew what it was for. Well this post kinda explains its use and how to check if you need to do it.

Thanks!!
The original post explained nothing about how the claybar is supposed to be used.

sort of like wearing a condom for increased sensitivitly...
They do an amazing job if used properly. They can really screw up your paint if you don't know what you are doing. I need to clay my A4 for sure...
The most important things are (from memory)
1) Use a lot of liquid lubricant. You can use detailing spray for this purpose. The clay should glide on the paint. If it drags, you may be damaging the paint.
2) Use small pieces of clay and replace them often
3) If the clay drops on the ground, throw it away.
Read one of the websites that give complete instructions.

Yes, I presumed the generic "you" already knew about claybarring. Yes, stick your fingers in the baggie and drag it across the clearcoat. You will feel the any bumps or pollutions, usually very small, much better
Use of Claybar ... it comes with directions As Kor said, once a year should be fine. I tried it and the car was baby smooth so need to claybar.
