Cleaning wheels

My car is new and I have only washed it three times but I have a hard time cleaning the back part of the wheels (not the back of the wheels but the ledge that you can see when when you look thru the wheel). I have just the regular CS wheels and I can clean about 70 percent of the inside of the wheel and then I bump into the red brake thingie (it is sure nice to know the names of all of those parts but unfortunately I do not). So far I have cleaned the wheels and then pulled forward a little bit so I can clean the rest of the wheel but to be honest that is really a pain. There must be a better way.

When washing if you leave the car in neutral with the brake released you can easily rotate the wheel to clean the area behind the caliper (red thing).

I stick a dedicated wheel cleaning sponge with soap and water on it through the openings of the wheel and then move it up and around the inside of the wheel rim using my hand and fingers through the various openings in the wheel. I can get the entire inside rim of the wheel basically spotless with very little effort.

Do your best to spray and wipe in there but then take your wheels off twice a year and clean them off the car.

The Wheelwax works great.

I followed those instructions and I have been extremely pleased with the results. You have a little more work up front but the effort is worth it in the long run.

One more tip - With a good coat of WheelWax on my car I can use a California mini-duster to remove the brake dust. I don't even have to use water.

I have 19" wheels so I guess I have a bit more room and can stick my hand and clean all the way with a sponge. Be careful if you use your hand because there is a very sharp plate just behind the brake rotor disk (the round thingy ) which can give you a nasty cut. Ask a few of the cc members about ! Best thing is to take the wheels off once or twice a year and give them a good clean and a coat or two of wheel wax. There is a good article about this by Kman-S at http://www.caymanclub.net/reviews/sh...roduct=1&cat=2 .

Make certain to chock the wheels to prevent the car from rolling unexpectedly ...

I take the wheels off and wash them off the car, but then I have 2 (and a half) sets of wheels for the car.... It's actually very easy that way, but without a hydraulic jack, impact wrench, torque wrench, and (of course) the wheels, that's not a good option

Thank You All, I did ask for a better way. Perhaps I actually wished for an easier way, I was kinda hoping someone would tell me to go to my local dime store and pick up a Saddlebrook Windwinder and it would do the job for me no muss or fuss. But now I get to jerk the wheels off the car a couple times a year and give them a good scrubbing. I will be happy to do the job the right way but I will also try Brian's special sponge trick. Seriously, Thank you all for the help.

Jay

Cleaning

My understanding, from talking to several people who know cars a lot better than I do, is that you have to take the wheels off the car to properly clean this area. I think Kor and others mentioned this.

I'm sorry I disagree with this statement. While it may be difficult/impossible to remove all the cosmoline, if any, from the wheel with it mounted, keeping and/or cleaning the wheel of brake dust and other road grim is easily accomplished with the wheel mounted.
