Clay Bars

I find myself ordering car care products almost weekly, and one I keep hearing about is using a "clay bar." I read about it and to be frank, it sounded like overkill. Is this really necessary? My car is about 3 months old now with 1,472 miles on it. Would this product help me? And if so, would the Pinnacle Clay Bar be acceptable? I use Pinnacle car wash, wax, and detail spray, so I figure I should keep it in the family.

A lot of people swear by them but I've also seen them used badly which resulted in scratched paint. If you decide to use them do a lot of reading on technique at somewhere like Autopia.org - The Car Detailing & Appearance Authority for All Car Enthusiasts. I give it pass myself unless there is a severe problem to attack.

Claying my cars is a definate "must do". It is definately worth it. Just research it before you do it, so you don't damage the paint job.
good luck,

I bought a clay bar the other day. I just haven't gotten up the courage to use it yet.

Like some other things in life, just keep it well lubricated!

The clay has to slide.

I flood the area with speed shine and pass the clay lightly over the area. You would be pretty amazed at the **** it removes that is sticking to your paint.

Are all clay bars the same - probably close enough.

I'm no expert on clay bars, but I'm guessing there isn't much you can do to clay?

Do the Baggie Test. Get a baggie and put your fingers in it. Gently go over the surface of the paint. If its smooth as glass, your good to go. If you feel any bumps, its time to claybar. I have Pinnacle and its fine.

I find it easier to clay right after washing my car, but before drying it. I use the clean, soapy wash water as a lubricant. Then I rinse and dry.

Most clays seem to be fine, but I found Meguire's to be inferior, leaving a filmy residue. I like Zaino or Clay Magic.

Cayed my car for the first time last weekend. Never looked better. Keeping area lubricated (I used a spray bottle) is a must. Got my caybar at Zano.
