Question Cleaning a car cover

I'm wondering if anyone has cleaned a car cover or had a car cover cleaned? I'm wondering if it has to be dry cleaned or can I just dump it in the washing machine? I worry about dust accumulating on the top of it and then when you put it on and take it off the car you distribute that dust and scratch the car. I'm specifically talking about an indoor rated car cover.

The manufacturer should've provided care instructions. I know I can machine wash my cover, but that may not apply to all brands. Check labels and or website of the product

Every car cover I've ever bought came with washing instructions. If you can't find the instructions for yours, you might try the following, as it's a fairly gentle procedure.

Go to a commercial DIY washing center and use one of the BIG front opening (round window) washing machines that takes a lot of quarters. When it comes time to add washing detergent, use Fantastik liquid, and only about half as much as you would use for a normal wash. It's better if you can buy an extra rinse cycle to be sure all the detergent is rinsed out. When all is done, remove the cover and take it home (don't machine dry it) and spread it out for air drying. I don't risk it, but you MAY be able to machine dry it on site for just one 10-minute cycle without shrinkage before taking it home. In that case, it will still be somewhat damp when you remove it, but let it air dry the rest of the way.

Thanks. I never thought to go to the website to check this out but I will. Thanks for the suggestion about washing it. If it has to be dry cleaned I can only imagine what that would cost. I didn't see a sticker on it that gives instructions that's why I posted.

Thanks for your suggestion

The instructions with mine, was to use spray on Simple Green - scrub gently with a soft brush, whilst it was on the car, to remove surface dirt.......... Followed immediateley by a cool/warm wash with regular detergent in your home washing machine - DO NOT Tumble DRY........

Good note from a previous poster - add an extra rinse cycle........... I do (Just in Case).

It works for me.............. But if at all possible follow the instructions from your own supplier.

Hope that this helps......

Karel,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying to check with the manufacturer and find the instructions that came with it.

If you have a Dustop cover DO NOT dry it with heat. Tumble dry w/o heat.
