I was wondering if anyone used sealants on their cars. It a fairly new thing for me; I've only seen it mentioned over the last few years. How often do you use sealant and what kind of prep work do you like to do before it's application? What brand do you use? I have a new car off the boat and I figured I could just wash off the dealer wax and apply it. If anyone has some experience in detailing please let me know.
This might sound weird but I am a fan of claying (with a clay bar) even a new car after washing it, and then proceeding with the waxing or sealing. Impurities attach to the car in the boat and even minute steel particles from rail travel. Those are the things that only the clay bar will remove.
As far as sealing I like Menzerna, and I also have used Klasse, but like the shine from Menzerna a little better. They are pretty easy to apply. Just google Menzerna, and it will direct you to the site. In my case it last anywhere from six to 10 months. I just wash it and sometimes use their detailing spray. It sure beats waxing once a month or six weeks.
There are a lot of other excellent products out there. These are the ones I have experience. Zaino is very popular in this site, but they will not ship to where I am.

Hey John, one of the easiest sealants I've ever used is optiseal. Lasts a very long time and looks fantastic. Its actually a wipe on and walk away product, meaning that, after you apply very thin layers in small circular motions, simply allow the product to evaporate! (if you have any product not evaporating, it was applied to heavily, but dont worry, simply wiping w/ a microfiber towel solves that ). Application is so easy, you could layer, or reapply quite often. I tend to reapply it every 7 +/- weeks. Optiseal will apply over waxes if you'd like, however, if you'd like, you can always do a wash/clay/polish prior to application. Opti-Seal
EXP is also super nice imo. Apply to the whole vehicle, then you would go back and remove residue w/ a mf towel EXP

Jetseal 109 from Chemical Guys. I like it better than Zaino, better than anything else I've ever used. As easy to apply as P21S. I clay the car about twice per year. I might polish annually, if it needs it. I apply the sealant monthly just because I like to do it.

I suggest you start by reading the FAQ The Cayman Club - FAQ: Questions & Answers and then reading the dozens and dozens of thread on this subject. People have discusses their favorite "waxes" many, many time and you will find many more answers by read through the threads.

Yeah, I already went through the forum. Nothing worth while, really. But thanks for looking out.
When I first got my car I clayed to remove any overspray, applied one coat of Klasse AIO, one coat of Klasse Sealant Glaze 12 hours later, 1 coat of wax, and #425 from fk1usa.com. Water still beaded up after 7 months when I decided to redo it and polish with my orbital polisher. When I brought the car in to have the clutch slave cylinder replaced the service manager commented that it was the best looking car he's seen in a while, and asked me to show him the products I used online, and my steps.

The Klasse twins last a long time. The glaze is hard to buff off but the acrylics in the twins make for a long lasting protection. If you used carnauba as the wax, it was probably long gone. Carnaubas layer well over the twins but do not last all that long. What you were seeing was the sealant still lasting. I used to use the twins and Pinnacle Sourveign layers but that was not a good choice for a light colored metallic. Its a great choice of yellow or red.
After 2 winters on both of my cars I have become an absolute believer in:
Collinite 476S as the most durable wax, Collinite #485 for first two layers of sealant (wait overnight) and than Klasse Hi Gloss sealant over that for shine.
FK #425 for in-between washes detailing.
The darn combination is awesome if you don't have every weekend to wash it.
I just had my good buddy try out my stuff and turned him into a believer.
We had AX school in rain all day, next day all we had to do was turn on the hose, rinse the car, and than little FK #425 to finish the job.

I know the wax didn't last, and i reapplied every 2 months. My idea was to extend the life of the sealant by having a wax on top of it. I found if I applied the glaze thin enough if would buff off easily. In spots where it was hard to remove I spray some detailing spray then buff. That made it really easy to remove.
I've always wondered about layering that involves carnauba wax. Nubas, as the autopia guys sometimes call it, are always formulated with petroleum distillates. Other forms of it are called Bug and Tar Remover and Adhesive Remover. I can see where some sealants might be layerable, but I've always had the distinct feeling that the nubas removed anything you put them over, including the last coat of nuba!
I once tested this with Zaino and Malms wax. I put Malms on the Zaino as a "topper". The untopped areas beaded water much longer. Hmmm...
