How often should I polish?

Like the title says, how often should I polish the car?
Do I only do that when there's swirls or errors on the paint?
So, if it looks good, I can get away with just sealant and wax?
After Wash (and sometimes clay) of course.

I worry that if I polish the car a lot, I may eventually end up stripping the paint. I mean, I'm talking after years of ownership.

Thanks

Man, I'm really getting obsessed with detailing the car. hahaha

In general, you should polish as little as possible. Polish removes paint, it's as simple as that. Some of the ultra-fine micro-polishes remove very little paint, and you could use them many times without really affecting paint thickness, but if you're polishing out swirls and scratches you're removing a substantial amount of the clear coat.

I polish my cars maybe once per year, unless I see a real problem. On our black vehicle I use a very fine polish once every three months, just to get the gloss high enough you overlook most of the swirls.

I've had my car almost a year. It has never been polished. I have clayed it once. I wax it often. I use a liquid wax more often.

Years ago I had a black Mustang GT. I didn't know much about polishing and waxing. I must have polished it once a week. I took the paint off in several places.

The others have answered this correctly. Polish it when it needs it. Otherwise, don't. Glaze and Wax is OK.

Yes, if you polish too much, the clearcoat will go and then the base paint.

That is a combination cleaner, polish, synthetic sealer, like Klasse AIO. Per this article it says best for new vehicles. That would indicate to me its not as abrasive as some of the other polishes. Here is a letter posted to a car forum from autoglym that would confirm it doesn't have much abrasive properties. All true polishes take away paint. That is the way it gets the "shine".

Cool, that is good too know from the horses mouth. The polish does do a really good job, my gallery pics will show that. www.caymanclub.net/gallery/files/7/1/6/2/dsc00112.jpg

I have virtually no swirl marks and i can only put that down to this polish.

Hi all!

Sounds like another candidate for our FREE online detailing guide at:

Detailbest.com detailing your car

Sometimes people interchange the words polish and wax. They are NOT the same thing. I use Zymol HD Cleanse (a gentle paintwork cleaner) twice a year on our daily drivers, followed by a Zymol glaze. Destiny most recently. I wax in between as needed.

Always remember that paintwork and clear coat is actually surprisingly thin!

Best regards,

Roger the Waxmeister

OptiSeal is a sealant. Info on it is here: Opti-Seal

PoliSeal is their polish/sealant. Basically a one-step product that will do a minor amount of correction and a leave some protection on the surface at the same time. I still tend to top a one-step product, but plenty of people will choose to let the protection left by it as the only form and still get a couple months out of it.

If interested, one way to determine how much clear you're removing during polishing is with a paint thickness gauge. You can grab a relatively inexpensive one from harbor freight that will do a great job. I can dig up the link if anyone is interested.

As always, thanks for all the info.
I kind of figure you should only polish when necessary, so until I see the need, I'll just seal and wax. I was just wondering because about a month before I bought the CS, I bought a big bottle of Menzerna SIP, but I can keep that for later

Now I have the Klasse AIO and Sealant. The Klasse AIO is more of a cleaner and polish right?

Thanks

Its all three. You don't have to use the Klasse glaze if you dont want. Its not easy to buff off. Many people layer a carnauba over the twins.

My thinking has always been polish rarely, only if needed, since it implies removing paint. Glaze and wax regularly (I always do both steps). If the paint doesn't feel glass smooth to begin with, I use a clay bar, but not again, not unless I need to remove something like paint over-spray. It's that simple for my routine.
