One caution in this lovefest of bright hot sun and car washing. If you can't get a room find a shade tree. Hot paint and mineral laden water may make spots that clay bars and wax won't remove.
I like to wash the cayman but lately I seem to not have very much time. I am anxious to get with it and do a once a year super dooper wash n wax. Are any of you like me in that when you do a full detail you take the wheels off the car and wash them inside out (well backside and front I mean)?
Honestly, I know there are special brushes ( I own one) to reach inside, but I am never satisfied with the results. I find that I can take all four wheels off, do a full wash ( I stopped using the wheel wax) and put them back on in about 15-20 mins. I have been doing this before the car wash, so that when the wash n wax is done...I dont have to have my sticky hands all over the car. Plus the driveway is wet and I often sit down or kneel while changing the tires.
I will be getting a set of RAC monolites (whenever they are ready to ship...any day now...) and look forward to having a second set of wheels. I will keep one set fresh and washed.....and ready for the quick exchange. That should cut the time down about 10 mins. I dont mind the time....just like the idea of having a spare sets of fresh wheels ready to go.
And if you use the Zymol wax that is made for Porsches, which is applied by your bare hands, then its even more enjoyable
The glaze bonds with your paintwork. You "bond" with your car. You learn by feel what is going on, and discover early any problem areas that need attention. Overall a very positive experience and stress-reliever.

Anyone else do this?
imo, get a coat of wax/sealant on the new wheels before they're even mounted on the car... it'll make cleaning them in the future soooo much easier Theres quite a few options out there for this task and I'll give my opinion if you want.
And my RAC's that I had on the M were such an open design that I really never had to unmount them. You can see why here I'm sure

Fortunately, I have a teenage daughter who doesn't mind washing/waxing my wheels when I take them off to switch them - as long as I pay her. Costs me a double saw-buck every time, but it's probably worth it.

I washed all my BMWs regularly by hand during the summers. Winters are too cold and I had no choice but the car wash. I would polish and wax my cars often. Meditation time. Great stress relief.
But the Cayman is different. I noticed there was much much more pleasure in the process. The curves of the car really do help you picture something living. And taking care of it makes you feel good.
There is just something magical whenever I am washing, claybaring, glazing, waxing the front fenders. It almost feels like a ritual steeped in history over thousands of years. Which is all absolute bollocks (excuse the phrase) of course.
So, I love cars. I have enjoyed washin/waxing all of my toys. But the Cayman does something no other car has. I dont know why but its there. Maybe I am truly becoming a genuine Porsche nut. After all. I didnt expect that.
Lexicon, I think you are missing the point and an opportunity. I also think that washing the Cayman is quite enjoyable. Small size helps, as you just do not have that much car to cover. But the curves make the entire process almost sensual. And, no, I did not feel this way with ANY other car. Not even the Boxster S, nor my R32, nor my S4. Definitely not the Land Rover.
As to your time comment, I completely agree. My car goes unwashed for months. But that does not change the fact that washing it feels good. Try it.
Ahh, point taken. Ok, I'll give it a try, I've owned my CS for a bit over a year now. I'll even take fmarshall advice and try the zymol. Gotta purchase it first....
So, I finally decided to spend some quality time with my mistress, errr, CS by doing the whole hand wash-clay-wax thing today for the first time.
As I was about 1/2 way thru claying the car, my wife comes out to see what I was up to. She asks me for the clay bar and asks if she can try it, and lo and behold, she enjoys it! I have to admit, I kind of enjoyed watching them - uhh, I mean her.
The bad news: now my wife wants me to give her SUV the full treatment on Saturday.

+1 I tend to lose track of time while taking care of the car, last sunday afternoon I intended to spend 1 maybe 2 hours doing a quick wash and had to hurry up and finish when the wife called me in for dinner.
Me too. It is actually fun to make the Cayman clean and sparkling, including wheels. For a person tasked to think, write and meet people most of teh day, it is probably theraputic as well. At least I tell my wife that it is my therapy. Ed
