Hi All,
Just thought I would share my story in case anyone else is contemplating removal of the clear bra or buying a clear bra..
First off, I'm the second owner of my 06 CS. It has obviously been kept in fantastic condition. Most of this cars life has been spent in a garage being waxed and cared for. The bra is from 3M and was professionally installed.
Reason for removal was that I saw signs of "edge" lifting on mirrors and did not care for the look as the bra was very noticeable (my color is Black). Had I bought the car new, I would not have installed a clear bra due to its visibility. I would take the risk of road rash.
Anyway, I removed per instructions (which was a warm day removal) and it peeled without incident. I noticed two things: 1) The color underneath the bra was a shade lighter than original. Wax buildup is the reason for color change. Re-waxing the entire mirror brought the two shades back to one. No issue.. 2). The clear bra plastic was Yellow and I mean Yellow! While my car is black, the yellow is not that noticeable but what about non black cars? If you are thinking about a clear bra, be advised that these yellow with time (BTW in a covered garage most of the time). So, what do I want to share?
A). Peeling the clear bra off is easy, non damaging, and wont lift the paint.
B). Be advised that 3M Clear Bras turn yellow in about a year even if left in a garage.
C). There are "shading" differences after removal and that re-waxing can restore (on black anyway).
Just sharing my experience..
Thx

I really don't have anything against clear bras, I just think they are a bit of a waste of money. From what I have seen....
They do discolor over time.
I can spot them on any car, they are not invisible for sure.
I haven't seen one that hasn't started to peel a bit before it was 2 years old.
On cars that sit out in the sun a lot, all it takes is a couple of years before the differences in paint shade is permanent
I've just accepted the fact that I will have to take the time and touch up a chip or two to a point where they are virtually inperceptable if done correctly. For people not willing to take the time, a clear bra is a decent but costly alternative.
Just had the 3M clear bra applied to my new Arctic Silver S. So far so good. We have a lot of gravel and debris on the freeways here in Houston so I think a clear bra makes sense. The '03 Boxster that I sold recently had quite a few blemishes on the front. I'll report back in a year.

I have a Guards Red CS with the clear bra...installed at Boardwalk...and you have to inspect the car to see the bra at all!!

I too have a clear bra on a black CS. It's been on for about 7 months. The edges became more visible until I changed my wax. What had happened (and it's subtle) is that wax accumulated at the edges where it's hard to completely buff off, and then whitened. I had to carefully remove this wax with a small rubber pick being really careful not to harm the paint (in case I ever remove the bra). I then switched to a high grade carnuba wax and the bra is essentially invisible again. We'll see how long this lasts.
The 3M clear bra on my Arctic Silver CS has started to turn slightly yellow after just 6 months. The car is garaged except when out on the road. It's noticeable only in certain lighting conditions, but it is there if you look for it. It's not enough to make me want to take it off because I think it's the lesser of two evils. On my last Porsche (a 944 Turbo) the nose of the car (without a bra) accumulated lots of small pits over the years from road debris. Based on that experience I opted for a clear bra for the Cayman.

The PO of my '02 BoxS had a 3M clear bra installed. If he didn't I would have. I've seen at least a dozen pebbles bounce off it on the highway in the 2 years I've owned the car. The bra looks great and you can barely see it even if you're looking for it.

When I get a Cayman I'll get one installed.
An aside.....very nice Boxster S.
Personally, it wouldn't matter either way to me. If one was on there, well done, I'd leave it. If it didn't have it, I wouldn't bother.
my bra is almost 2 yo now with no issues. I do think they cost too much but if I ever bought another Porsche, I'd have the clear bra installed at the dealer. I had more road rash during the ride home from the dealer (which I admit was about 300 miles) then I have since the bra was added.

I have Venture Sheild on my 08 Cayman. I know it took a long time to put it on but the install was near perfect. I keep it smooth and shiny with Plexus plastic polish as per directions. If I don't keep it polished it will get static and dust will stick to it; which washes off with just water. By the way, I get a lifetime warrenty on the product.

Thanks, carsteve. It's for sale if you know of a buyer. My garage (and bank account) isn't big enough for 2 Porsches. Once she's been sold I'll be picking up a CS.
I took mine off in fits of annoyance at the lines. I left it on the front bumper area only and it still annoys the devil out of me. Its also lifting at the edges and the job that was done originally was not all that great anyway. Thanks for the notes

If you know that your car is at risk for STD, then by all means protection is recommended.
STD = Surface Transmitted Debris
