Care of DE1 stripes

I just bought an 08 Cayman S Design Edition 1. The matt black stripes are discreet but at the same time are outstanding.

My question is how do you care for those stripes. Do you wax them along with the rest of the car, or will the edges catch wax build up like a clear bra's edge line?

Should you tape them off to prevent the wax build up?

I have Porter Cable buffing equipment and I'm wondering if I should touch the stripes with the PC and polish?

If I get a mark or scratch on the stripes, how and what do you use to restore them? I have used Plexus on clear bras, but I'm not sure if it would work on matt stripes.

The edges will catch wax. A real pain in the a#&! I can't stand wax residue anywhere, it looks horrible. I thought of taping too, but that would take a long time!! I don't know what the solution is... I've considered removing the stripes, but I like the way they look!

Unfortunately I think you'll have to tape the edges just like with a clear bra to avoid wax residue.

I don't think you should use the orbital on the sticker surface, no real reason to polish that material.

There is a solution to this problem, but it's expensive. I know some GT3-RS owners that have covered over their vinyl stickers with clear-bra material. Basically they covered the whole panel. I can see maybe doing that for the hood, but the roof and trunk too?

If you do that, then no worries about waxing or the stickers peeling up over time. Then again, it'll probably be cheaper to buy new stickers then to apply the clear bra.

I see that you're in California, contact our clear bra sponsor, http://www.premiermobilegroup.com/ and get their take on covering the stripes with film.

Congrats on the new car, it is amazing looking especially with the painted interior parts.

Thanks Pistol,
That's a great idea to cover the stripes with clear bra material. I was thinking about applying a clear bra to the front but could not decide how to treat the area where the hood bra meets the hood stripes. With your idea, I can just keep going up and over the stripes with the clear material. Or just cover the entire hood with clear bra.

Same idea with the stripes on the doors.

The only disadvantage with covering with clear bra is the matt stripes become glossy instead of flat black.

Meanwhile, after washing the car for the first time, I discovered using a silicone mini squeegee (used for applying clear bras) works easily to clean the edges of the stripes. There are just a lot of edges, particularly the edges of each cut out letter spelling out Design Edition.

I have not waxed the car yet, but when I do, I'll definitely tape off the stripes and not worry about waxing the areas of paint between the stripes.

Covering the stipes may not be a bad idea!!! Porsche is replacing my hood stripes because there is one dull spot and they have agreed to reinstall the front hood stripes. It took 6 weeks to get to the US, and I found out the cost was a mere $1800 for the hood, and the front bumper stripes only. They come as a kit and Porsche charges outragous price for them. Hope you do not ever have to replace yours. Mark

Wow, I knew the decals would be expensive but $1800 for the hood and front??

I agree, if you want to preserve them, get them covered with a clear bra!

Ouch, $1,800 for hood stripes hurts.

I put matt black stripes on my black Miata for $114 from Redirecting

They are made of a thinner, stretchier material and they don't catch wax as much on the edges. They actually look more like paint.

You could also go to a sign shop and they could custom cut the stripes for cheaper.

Clear Bra Material needs changing......... Maybe 5 years time?

Removing the Clear Bra - Will Destroy the Stripes.

I think a little bit of wax carefully polished on the edges will be a better solution....

I covered the whole hood with clear bra but did not cover over the stripes. You can then use a synthetic spray wax that doesn't leave residue to protect the paint over the letters where the paint is exposed. Between the stripes I covered the paint with long strips of clear bra. You have to buy a whole roll of clear bra to achieve this. Good luck.

P.S. If you apply it this way, the matte finish will be retained.

Sorry can't send you a PM yet. Need to do more posts. I installed the hood clear bra myself. You need a long straight piece of wood to cut the strips in the center and you will need a wide roll of 3M clear bra. Have a one inch margin so you can tuck the bra under your hood for the seamless look. I am not located near you or I would gladly show you. The clear bra is thicker than the vinyl but you can only tell by feel. Still LA freeways are littered with those darn gravel trucks. Hate them. So I am glad I covered the whole hood. Good luck.

Congrats on the new car, it is amazing looking especially with the painted interior parts.
If some type of clear bra material is applied over the panel / stripes, you will get:

1. glossy finish on the stripes vs. matte
2. a slight 1mm gap where the film steps up onto the stripes
3. it will add protection to both the paint and stripes - the stripes are made of a very thin vinyl that chips very easily

Hope this helps!
