I never use an automated car wash and even instruct my dealer not to wash the car if they have it in for service/repair. Of course with silver colours swirls are far less noticable
I use a sheepskin washmitts and the two bucket method to reduce the chances of swirling.
1. Wheels and wheel wells 1st - seperate bucket brushes and cloths for these.
2. Rinse the car well with a hose to loosen the dirt.
3. Fill one bucket with a quality car wash shampoo solution another with clean water.
4. Wash the car from top to bottom keeping the mitt well loaded , rinsing the mitt in the clean water before loading it with more wash solution. Avoid circular motions, wash using straight strokes in the direction of airflow across the car. I use one mitt for the top half of the car and another for the lower panels. Also rinse the car regularly with the hose - this will flush the suds to the lower (dirtiest) panels.
5.Final rinse -youcan remove 90% of the water by using an open ended hose rather thanspraying - get a steady flow and chase the water off the panels - thats one of the best detailing tips I've found -needs a little practice but worth the effort.
6. Drying - I use a quality micro fibre waffle weave towel - again don't rub hard or use circular motions - lay the clothon the panel and pull it accross or blot dry.
So that is basically my system, there are of course variations to this and other methods. The best resource I know fordetailing is http://www.autopia.org/
Sonus, Ultima, Polycharger & Ultimate Detailing Machine are our brand! We created our brands of car cleaners, polishes, protectants, microfiber towels and car polishers as a statement of our own car enthusiast detailing. Our brands embody all of the qualities we seek in detailing products for our own cars.
We're not a superstore (and proud not to be)! Anyone can bring every brand name in the industry into their web store and tell you that every product is "the best". We focus on what works and the products we will use on our own cars. It is our own continuous process of learning and pursuit of solutions for detailing perfection that makes a product worthy of being offered to you.
Hand washing is one of my special Cayman pleasures!

Let me edit this to remind to be careful what cleaning agents are used on the wheels. Harsh cleaners can destroy Porsche wheels. P21S wheel cleaner or Simple Green are the best I've found. Simple Green is available everywhere so I use it the most.

Nobody gives you more ways to get the look you want:
1. Purchase new Porsche Factory alloys.
2. Purchase like-new used or restored Porsche alloys from us.
3. Have us refinish your Factory alloys. We restore, anodize, polish and chrome plate.
4. Purchase our aftermarket wheels--we offer the very best, including Kinesis, Fikse, BBS, HRE and Champion to name a few.
5. Exchange your straight, true Factory alloys for Factory alloys pre-finished the way you want.
6. Exchange your scratched/curb damaged Factory alloys for new or refinished Factory Alloys.
7. Trade in your straight, true Factory alloys for aftermarket or Factory wheels. http://www.wheelenhancement.com
I'll chme in here to agree with Santa Fe - P21S wheel cleaner is all I've ever used, and pretty much been all you'll need if you keep your wheels clean on a regular basis. After a cross country trip, I've had to use the P21S all-purpose cleaner/car wash, which is a mild citrus-based cleaner first, then the regular wheel cleaner. I also use the P21S citrus based cleaner (diluted) to strip wax off the car when I want to start from scratch.

Submariner, what do you suggest for us folks in the south UK who now have a hose pipe ban? i guess we have to gently chuck buckets of water over the car to rinse it...
I've used PS21 on my Porsche wheels but IMHO BMW makes the absolute best wheel cleaner - cuts the heavy brake dust right off. Of course with a wheel wax application it should be even easier.
