Ok I'm ready to get lynched for saying this but.....
I just don't get the "flat 6 howl" sound when driving, below 4000 rpm the Cayman is very civilized, in fact too civilized for my taste. Above 4000 rpm there is a bit of a growl but as much mechanical noise, intake and whine as any howl?
I keep reading other members saying how they leave the radio off so they can hear the "howl" I find i have to have the radio on when driving anything less than flat out, only then does the engine sound anywhere near good.
My Merc SLK350 had a better sound when pulling away in 2nd gear than the Cayman, although most of this was the exhaust and not the engine.
Am I going mad or are fellow members overstating their "howl", I've even taken to listening to video clips on you tube!
I hear howls, whines, growls, snorts, intake, exhaust. Happy sounds to my ears. And I prefer that "howl" way more than the audio gizmo.

Cayman S - a portable amusement park
There is a kid in my neighborhood that has a Honda Prelude with a coffee can sticking out from under the rear bumper. His car "howls" in the low end, like when he pulls slowly away from a stop sign . My point being that you should be careful what you wish for. Even a GT3 doesn't "howl" in normal driving, but rather when you step on it. Maybe you could try delaying your shifts so that you spend more time in the "howling" range.....
Hmm I can see this thread going the wrong way, please don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a boy racer sound and have no intention of trying to modify the exhaust system. Just trying to gauge if all the mentions of the flat six howl are perhaps a little over blown (excuse the pun). Perhaps some examples? if this is permitted.

Ditto.......there isn't one or two sounds from this car......just about every 1k RPM there is a different one. I definitely hear the howl around the 4K range.
Are we talking about window up or down sounds?......that does make a lot of difference.....
I find that I enjoy the howl more when the windows are up since it isolates the howl in the cabin. With the windows down, I can hear everyone else, which takes away from my enjoyment. Unless of course I'm all alone then the windows come down!

Your Lordship,
Didn't you just get this car? If so, you shouldn't be investigating the upper rpms until your requisite 3,200 km break-in period has elapsed. As time and miles have passed (now at 13K miles after 10.5 months), I've found my engine becoming stronger and somewhat louder. The sounds above 5K rmp are angry and aggressive; I like the "Jekyl & Hyde" nature of the CS. The new "sport exhaust option" will make a significant sound difference, as it does on my 997 S - with it, "Jekyl & Hyde" are available at the touch of a botton.
PSE - Porsche Sports Exhaust System
