I called my sales rep today and he checked status of my car on the computer and then called me back. He said they are shipping 'launch' cars now and pre-sold cars shortly after. He said mine is 'sitting' in San Diego waiting and I would probably get it in week or two (I'm figuring the 14th for the official launch date). Launch cars are for test driving, one step past just looking at the floor display cars. I think he said the launch cars are black. So maybe this is all part of the grand marketing plan of Porsche to make sure the cars don't get released before the official launch date.
The 'week or two' statement would kill me! Geeezz, they have to be able top give more accurate info than that, that is pathetic. I still can't figure out how can they not know?
My dealer just got a black car in yesterday. He has two listed on his web site and one has this option: '762 - PAG Code - Launch code.' I guess I now know which car he got in. Thanks.
My car finished build 8 December 2005 and STILL hasn't made it onto a boat! ... and remember people on this side of the Atlantic never had to wait for the 15th so I have been expecting my baby for a few weeks now.
Does anyone have any idea how the car can sit around for a MONTH in Finland?
How are the black ones configured?......all the same?
I looked on the Porsche site and checked a few dealers and the launch cars all seem to be the same: 19' wheels, 6 speed, sport seats, Bose, TPMS, heated seats, Bi-Xenon. No PASM or Chrono Sport.
PASM - Porsche Active Suspension Management
This active damping system offers continuous adjustment of individual damping forces based on current road conditions and driving style.
The driver can choose from two setup modes, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’, using a separate ‘damper’ button on the center console. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for general road driving and circuits with uneven tarmac. ‘Sport’ mode is intended for smoother track surfaces, where the harder settings help eliminate pitch and roll.
In either mode, PASM continuously evaluates the current conditions while automatically selecting the corresponding damper rates from the respective set of mapped values.
A range of sensors are used to monitor the movement of the body under acceleration, braking and cornering maneuvers, as well as on poor road surfaces. The PASM control unit then evaluates this data and modifies the damping force on each individual wheel in accordance with the selected mode. The result is a significant reduction in body movement as well as a better grip on the road.
For example: if ‘Sport’ mode is selected, the suspension is automatically set to a harder damper rating. If the quality of the track surface falls below a certain threshold, the system immediately changes to a softer rating within the ‘Sport’ setup range. When the quality of the tarmac improves once more, PASM automatically returns to the original, harder rating.

TPMS
TPMS - The Tire Pressure Monitoring System provides early warning of any drop in pressure by continuously monitoring the pressure in each tire and alerting you in the onboard computer display in the event of a pressure deficiency. It communicates the exact pressure of each tire and/or their deviation from ideal pressure. This does away with the need for regular air pressure checks at the service station, which often prove highly inconvenient.
From a 'reliable source' I was told the launch cars began their truck ride from the ports on the 4th. Some dealers already have these black cars and others expect them next week. The customer ordered cars are to begin their ride on the 11th according to the source.
The 'source' was a dealer/owner's PCNA 'connection' so this may be the true scoop?
In any case the 14th is only a week from tomorrow!
My dealer has been told (by PCNA?) that while launch cars and my car may be in by this weekend, they are not to offer test drives until 14th. Bummer for me, but maybe others will have better news. In honesty, will a couple more days really matter? RussK, we already know your answer, thank you :-)
<blockquote id="quote">quote:<hr id="quote" noshade="noshade" height="1" /> they are not to offer test drives until 14th<hr id="quote" noshade="noshade" height="1" />I drove one today but now I can't tell you about it. If I could, I would tell you that it had 19 inch wheels and in subfreezing temperatures summer tires don't have maximum grip, especially when brand new. I would tell you that eventaking it easythe Cayman clearly has great handling and plenty of power over 4,000 rpm. I would tell you the steering and shift felt great and the motor sounded nice. I would tell you that while I could have walked away from the car they ordered for me, after today's ride I won't. I would also tell you that I can't wait to get mine and really drive it. Unfortunately, I can't tell you any of this since your dealer said I wasn't supposed to drive it. </blockquote>
Wow, that's cool BT.... Is it me or is every day getting longer? I wish I was more busy at work, this killing me. And we've been having a heat wave here on So. Cal., no clouds and 85... Perfect new car days.
It is not just you, we all are suffereing from the same affliction called Caymanlongvitis. This disease makes everything relating to your Cayman S slooooow down. BTW, do you know where your car is?
I just talked to my dealer and Wes is right! We have a black Cayman S than can be taken for a test drive! I will be there tomorrow for my first drive in Porsche in 25 years. He did say that we cannot take it on the freeway but around the block will have to do.
