Base Cayman service costs, what I was told..

I asked my local dealer about services for Cayman 2.7. He said they want to do a yearly for about ~725 including oil change. Then on like the third or fourth year, it bumps up near a grand and includes plugs. Then back to $725 for a few years, then up in the thousands for some belt that has to be replaced. But then my local independent suggested approx 15K miles service interval regardless of the time and that automatically just doing yearly service is bull. Also, his prices are more like $550 per service. He said the predefined notion that you need to get plugs right at a some specific number of years is bull too. And this guy has a good rep.

What are the true costs to run a base Cayman for say 6 years assuming low to average miles per year - like between 8 and 12K with typical spirited, non-abusive driving. According to the dealer it was looking like about 5 grand just in normal services. Add tires, brakes, clutch depending, etc. etc. Obviously if you run balls out everyday then you may break stuff.

Any insights? Thanks a lot!

Just follow the manufacturer instruction, as in the service book. The Porsche UK web site details all the service costs - I would assume the US site does too. All fixed prices are detailed.

Molly,

That is certainly the high end of the range on regular maintenance. Oil/filter changes are not the stuff of rocket scientists. If you are daily driving your car in various conditions, then the investment in the dealer checking through their whole checklist may make sense. If you are otherwise taking good care of your car, with less than 10K a year, an oil change should suffice.

If it was my car this is what I would do:

1: Find out what does this $790 yearly service includes. If its an oil change and visual inspection of several items, that is highway robery!
2: If there is another dealer within a reasonable distance check them out for similar service
3: Go to a PCA events and ask around who are they using for service. Changing oil,and filter, maybe doing a break fluid flush every two years, and coolant change every 4 years (assuming the long duration coolant) is not rocket science.
4: I do my own oil changes every 5 to 6k mles because I track my car, and I find it is cheap insurance. It is a 35 minute job, with 15 minutes doing something else while the oil drains. It takes me longer and it is more hastle to take it the dealer, than to change my own oil.

Good luck

Total rip off. Go to a non-dealer porsche shop. Buy the filters and oil yourself. Most service should be $150, perhaps $200 if you change the air filter.

My dealer quoted me $150 for an oil change. I don't see how a minor service can be 5 times that amount.

Am i missing something...the website has the cost of replacing the drivebelt = £75. My last washing machine drive belt cost me more than this!

I just talked to my dealer yesterday, and he said I should bring it in at two years or 20K, and it would cost around $500-$700.
I still think that's a bit high, but I don't know of a local independent I would trust with the car. Perhaps I should look for one.

I just cheked with my local dealer for the cost of just the oil and filter change at the one year point - $180 less 10% for PCA members. $400 for 2 year service, I have several other very reputable local options that specialize in Porsches (and other German cars). These are definitely less expensive are are probably a better bet for non-warranty services. Local PCA members use them as well. Check with some local PCA members for their recommendations.
