Someone was commenting the other day to me that real Porsches are rear engined because that's what the first Porsche's were. I corrected him and told him that the first Porsche was mid-engine, just like the Cayman. He disagreed and I told him to go look up 356/1 the first 356 ever built and see whether it was mid or rear engine. I never heard back from him so I guess he realized his mistake after looking it up. For those who don't know their Porsche history, here is a little bit of info:

Well I guess I take your point, but its entirely fair to claim that the first production Porsches were rear engined.

The prototype 356 and pre-war Grand Prix Auto-Unions don't count in the same was as the early VW and various military vehicles (all designed by Ferdinand's company).

BTW Karl Ludvigson has just finished a book on Ferdinand's early years. It's probably due for release later this year.

1944 is the proper date for this design. Porsche was involved in a few less successful designs earlier in the 40s.

Nevertheless, thank you for the insightful information K-Man S. I’m relatively new to the world of all things Porsche. Right or wrong, it’s amazing to see that the Porsches of today are somewhat reminiscent to the ones of yesterday.
