Hey. My May '07 order for a July '07 build of an MY08 Cayman was due to be delivered before the end of the month (I live in Belfast, Northern Ireland). My sales rep was confident that it would reach me shortly. I just learned on Friday that although my Cayman was built (as scheduled) on the 10th July and has subsequently been shipped to a Port in England (as scheduled), Porsche are refusing to release any of the MY08 vehicles to the dealers until August! My sales rep told me that he has not experienced this sort of behaviour from Porsche in the past and he is certainly an experienced dealer. He attributes the decision to the fact that the vehicles are '08 cars. It has me wondering whether there may be a modest facelift or DFI, although I am not holding my breath! Sad part is that I go on holiday on 3rd August, hence its gonna be another month before I get my hands on it. I thought I only had a few days left to wait! So disappointed! Guess I am just gonna have to make up for it when I finally get behind the wheel!
DFI
Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), is a new technology that Porsche states can cut fuel consumption by up to 15 percent, while increasing power by up to 13 percent. DFI cuts emissions by warming up the catalytic converter more quickly, and ensures a sharper throttle response. Better for your right foot - and the planet, then.
DFI allows much more precise measurement of fuel supply and injection at pressures up to 120 bar; it has numerous combustion modes, with different cycles for cold-starting, low-speed driving and performance driving.
As the name suggests, DFI injects fuel directly into the individual combustion chambers, instead of the intake manifold. The injector valves have an electromagnetic mechanism that controls each injection with astonishing precision, while a high-pressure pump provides the necessary pressure—up to 1,740 psi—to accompany the rapid fire of the fuel injection.
Precise geometry of the injector’s position and its spray pattern is a key factor in helping to improve power, torque and emissions of the engines. The specific placement of the fuel as it enters each chamber creates a swirl that improves the air/fuel mixture, and therefore the overall combustion process.
At engine speeds up to 3500 rpm, a double-injection process is used. In this mode, the required fuel volume is delivered in two successive injections per working stroke. The resulting benefits include faster catalyst warm-up and increased torque in the upper load range.
By forming the air/fuel mix directly in the combustion chamber, DFI contributes to engine cooling. As a result, it is possible to increase the compression ratio and with it the power and efficiency of the engine.
The direct injection process is continuously adjusted. The engine management system reads changes to throttle inputs and performance requirements and, as you drive, the air/fuel mix is monitored and adapted as required. Oxygen sensor circuits within the exhaust system provide accurate emissions control.
I can not tell you why Porsche is holding shipments. As a motorcycle dealer I have had OEM's hold shipments because dealer inventory on the present year units are high. If they release the new units while there is a high inventory of old units they will have to run incentives to move the old ones
Just got back from a SoCal dealer and they have MY08 for October build for December delivery. He has 6 allocations and 2 spots available. Price is MSRP.
I have now been told that my car 'might' be released tomorrow (thursday) such that it 'might' be with my dealer by Monday. However, he says that he will need 24 hours to turn the car around, such that it will be Tuesday at the earliest! Given that I have a flight to Italy at 7.00am on Friday morning, I have a sneaking suspicion that I will not be able to travel the 2,000miles to break the car in before I go! Darn, I really wanted to punch it over 4,000rpm! I am still at a loss as to why Porsche has held the cars back...
Saint Etienne, I am afraid not! My girlfriend knows because the dealer offered me a pretty poor trade in price in relation to my BMW 325 CI M Sport Convertible. Hence, I decided to advertise it privately. Low and behold, I received a phone call from a witheld (private) number to my mobile phone whilst she was in the car. I am self-employed and receive alot of such calls throughout the day. I foolishly answered the call on the bluetooth loudspeaker with her in the car and this guy asks if the car is still for sale! Good news is, he bought it - and at a great price! Anyway, needless to say that she is ecstatic, albeit a little disappointed that she didnt get to participate in the selection process. However, no one else knows and she is sworn to secrecy. Still gonna freak my dad out!
I know you did your best to keep The Secret alive and going. Unfortunately, some things are out of our control, hence the owner of your previous vehicle. I’m glad your girlfriend is ecstatic, regardless of the minute disappointment she faced. Now the real fun begins. Two individuals sworn to secrecy: who’ll let the cat out of the bag first? <Just Kidding> I’m excited for the both of you, and I’m sure your Dad will be truly happy for you when the moment comes.

Are we allowed to name them on this board? Just to be diplomatic I will just say it's located off the 605 in Norwalk. Any luck anywhere else in SoCal?
Yes. I know those guys off the 605, and I do know a better place. Try the one in Corona Del Ray, off PCH (the Pacific Highway), across from the Fashion Island Mall. My wife and I went there on Memorial weekend, and they were offering 10% off on all 07 Cayman S, Cayman that were there. Check with them to see where they stand on an ordered 08. Don't pay MSRP for it. I suggest you wait until the 08 made it's official debut before calling around. I can see how everyone has been quoting you MSRP now, because they don't have a clue what the new changes are yet. If DFI, with a resulting increase in HP and Torque, and DSG are added to the new 08, then I can see them asking for MSRP because these are significant changes. But most of us here do not see these changes being made for the 08 Caymans, so I say NO to MSRP.

Well, sadly I guess that it is not meant to be! It transpires that my new MY08 Cayman as built on July 10th will not be delivered before I depart on my holiday on Friday. Aaaaah! The dealer had really built my hopes up. My poor girlfriend is really psyched about our two week break in the Neapolitan Riviera in Italy. I get the sneaking suspicion that I might be slightly distracted dreaming about our return to home tarmac... Just kiddin. Guess its a nice treat to look forward to in order to beat the post-holiday blues! I look forward to posting pics in due course. In the mean time, I am interested as to whether anyone has taken receipt of an MY08 Cayman yet?
Thank you for the update wta99! We’ll keep our fingers crossed just in case things take a turn for the better with regard to your delivery date. All’s not lost though! Enjoy your upcoming vacation.
You’ll find the same response in the following thread: Delivery date
