I'll admit that I'm a total caymanclub forum lurker, reading all of you owner's discussion with envy, building and re-building my Cayman on the Porsche webpage configurator, and wondering when I'll give in and drive to the dealer with my checkbook. The first time I saw the Cayman, I thought it was beautiful. When I test drove one, it was all over for me.
But I'll tell you one little thing that keeps eating at me as I'm playing with options on Porsche's webpage... I find Porsche's color choices generally really uninspiring. Take a look at the configurator for the gorgeous Maserati GrandTurismo:
It seems like every color choice is stunning, and the possible interior/exterior combinations are amazing. Whenever I go to build my Cayman (and I'm probably about to offend some people), all the colors seem like the most conservative, unexciting shades... what I'd expect from, say, Toyota. I'd love red if it were richer, blue if it were less Honda Civic Si, yellow if it were less "warning sign", or white if it had just a little tonality in it. I always end up picking black or one of the silvers, which is fine, but I see colors on other cars that I actually *love* (and of course I'm too cheap for the Porsche custom color option).
The versions on the Maserati look so much more modern, but maybe Porsche wants all of their cars to remain "classic". But even BMWs and Audis have a better palette I think. I realize this is fairly petty, but I'm certain that it won't be that long until I give in to my desire and order my first Porsche and I'd love for it to be just that extra bit perfect.
gosh, you drove it and you can't find a color you like?
you think it's beautiful? you test drove one? and you can't find a color you like?
sounds like a personal problem, how about white? black or silver?
the blues are all stunning
can't stand yellow or red, how about dark olive or basalt black or meteor gray? the metallics are truly amazing, with different hues under different lighting conditions, or maybe carmon red, still my personal favorite
and don't forget they have added new colors for 2008, including a brown metallic
want an orange one? check ebay
how about gulf blue or mexico blue?
if it's eating at you so much, why not just buy the Maserati?
are you alone? yes
sure, everybody agonizes over colour choices and as has been mentioned, you could "pay for it" and get whatever you color wanted if it's really eating at you
but ask anyone, the car gets attention no matter what color you have
and driving is all the fun

While I agree that Porsche could offer more interesting standard color choices (and used to in the '70s and '80s) the vast majority of people who purchase these cars do not want "unusual", "striking", or "wild" colors. Porsche did bring back two 1970's colors for the GT3RS, signal orange and emerald green, but this has generally been acceptable to conservative enthusiasts since the car is the genuine article and not an imposter. As an aside, Maserati, Aston Martin, et. al. do charge considerably more for their cars than Porsche charges for even the base 911. While customers for these cars can expect a myriad of choices in color, leather, and stitching to be offered, the company also expects them to come with a blank check in return. While the 987 series are expensive, the overwhelming majority of purchasers are not considered to be "blank check customers" despite their affulence.
You can get a Porsche painted any color you want. Personalization
Not to derail this thread, but I can’t thank you enough for your response COCarmonS, as I was led to this gem. This is, without a doubt, one of the sexiest colors I’ve ever seen. Tell me what you think about Azurro California Metallic!

Don't get me wrong, I'm nitpicking here. If they only offered the Cayman in one color (well maybe not pink), I'd still be planning on ordering one when it makes financial sense (I could probably afford one now, but my S2000 is a little too new for me to not feel foolish trading up already). I'm just saying that it seems odd to me that even BMW and Audi seem to go out of their way to offer really striking colors (I really love the blue on M cars, and Audi's deep red) while Porsche sticks with the basics.
I'll likely get a meteor grey CS and be a very happy man. I just can't justify the price for the custom color option, and really... the real reason I want it is the experience sitting inside it, not looking at the outside. Hope I didn't ruffle to many people's feathers.

Oh, and I didn't know this actually. Where do you see this? I can't find it on either the US or German website. Brown metallic actually sounds kinda interesting...

I like it, but it is a decision you should make.
