Serious problem. Had to visit the dealer immediately.
I ordered an 08 CS for September build October delivery. But reading this forum, I’m getting spooked. There appear to be a lot of posts referring to mechanical problems. Most likely due to the fact that only those with problems post about them.
I bought mine in May of 06 and now have 25k miles. I have had a cupholder break and a squeak from behind me. Every other issue that I have had has been self induced. I think folks without problems are the vast, but silent majority.

Nary a problem since delivery in 2/06 but I did visit the dealer for a social reason and it cost me big time because I wound up purchasing an Avant for my wife.

Don't be spooked. If you check any car site you will see them same thing and most likely worse.
its kind of weird though to see the two recent production cars on this forum facing major issues.. i hope the september production models wont have these! My dealership will be in another country 300 miles away!
I had a very small oil leak from the passenger-side cam tower that was discovered and fixed during my 20K mile service. Other than that, absolutely no problems - and I track and autocross the car extensively.
I think if you were to go down to any dealer that sells what are universally recognized as high-quality cars (Lexus, BMW, Honda, whatever) you'll find the same kind of thing... these are mechanical things designed by humans, both of which are well known to be fallible. As a percentage of total numbers of cars delivered, I don't think what you're reading on here is beyond the norm for any quality automobile maker, and probably less than most.
Not to sell the problems, or the people who have experienced them short - if it happens to you, it's a bummer - but spend some time on here reading about how much people like their cars, too. don't spend all your time reading the gloom and doom...

Don't ever visit a forum (any forum!) if you don't want to be spooked. For every one of us who is concerned about some little something with our Cayman there are thousands of people who don’t visit forums, who are oblivious to our particular "problems" and are happily enjoying their car. It’s just the nature of forums to worry about “stuff”. We’re serious about our cars and want to make sure that everything is perfect . . . and so we worry. The upside is that if something does go wrong with your car there will probably be someone here who can tell you how to get it fixed.
I wouldn’t hesitate one second to buy a Cayman/Cayman S. The fun that you will have with it will far outweigh any concerns/problems that you will have.
The RDS on my PCM was stuck so my favorite radio station always read that it was playing a Clapton tune, while all the other stations correctly showed RDS for what they were playing. They replace my PCM under warranty and it works ok (but I lost all my stored track times for PIR/SIR/ASR/Firebird East & West/Pinal/CAC! Dang it!)
I'm not sure how to vote. The first nine months and 11,000 miles on my 07' Cayman have been trouble free. Which is good, because the nearest dealer is 275 miles from home. But I have recently developed a bad TPMS sensor at the left rear. It may be cheaper and easier to pay for a sensor and have it installed localy. The distance to a dealer creates a built in deductable. I love the car, and this does not dampen my enthusiasm.
TPMS
TPMS - The Tire Pressure Monitoring System provides early warning of any drop in pressure by continuously monitoring the pressure in each tire and alerting you in the onboard computer display in the event of a pressure deficiency. It communicates the exact pressure of each tire and/or their deviation from ideal pressure. This does away with the need for regular air pressure checks at the service station, which often prove highly inconvenient.
the electrical system was whack (whistles in bells - our airbags were not working.)
our 2nd key did not work.
the trim around our beck/center break light had fallen down over the light.
squeka-creeka behind the driver seat (still there btw.)
that was in the first week after we bought the car. we brought her in to be fixed and lost 3 days of driving (a LOT after only one week) - then had it returned to us w/out a working radio.
*rolls eyes*
next time we will schedule ahead and get a proper loaner. all in all we are in love, regardless.
rrr.

Bose didn't work from delivery - I've yet to make an appt to get it fixed. Others than that I just got a flat yesterday, no fault of the car of course, and as of my last oil check, it had burnt no oil in 6000km (3700 miles).
Same with my previous 987 Boxster - 22,000 km with a broken windshield, flat tire, carpet trim came slightly loose (oh, the cats had to be replaced but I strongly believe this was an issue of it being a raffle car with a ton of start ups prior to me owning it and getting the cats too rich).
I wouldn't worry about the reliability any more than any other quality car.
