Is it ok to skip gears?

I sometimes shift from 2nd to 4th and then to 6th. Is this ok to do?

Yes, assuming you've reached sufficient rpms in the lower gear to avoid lugging when the rpms drop in the higher gear. This isn't the quick way to accelerate, of course. There was once a rather lengthy thread about going from 4th to 6th. One can be over the speed limit in 2nd, with still 4 gears to go.

I do this too and believe it is ok since, when we do it, we are probably not rushing shifts or using large throttle openings. Haven't checked but believe that, ratio-wise, it must about be equivalent to taking the gears in order in an old 4-speed.

I skip gears both up and down. As long as revs are matched, nothing to worry about.

The tiptronic always starts in 2nd gear in auto mode. I guess its ok to skip.

Similar to the other posters in this thread: 4 to 6 upshift for Freeway/Motorway cruising - usually run 4th up to at least 4500 RPM before the shift into 6th.
