I did do a search on this first so if I missed this discussion please excuse the post...
I am getting ready to call my local dealer (based on a couple of great referrals from this board- Much Thanks to "gmsracing" and "Cayman in 07"!) but suddenly I am questioning myself.
I am in the Pacific Northwest (Portland,OR) and just want to know the opinions of all the members whether or not they think the Cayman should/can be a daily driver? I drive about 12-15k year- probably more if I do pickup the Cayman.
I just don't want to put myself into something that really shouldn't be used the way that I will be using it. This will be my first Porsche so I want to go in with eyes wide open.
Do you live in the city or out in the country? We get a lot of rain where I live too, and I don't drive in the winter due to the mountain roads having mudslides, trees down, that sort of stuff. Other than that I use it pretty much every day.

As a daily driver, do you mean it will be your only car? If so, you have to do some thinking... does it hold enough people for your use? Are you always the one who drives, and you usually take two or three people with you? Will it hold the stuff you carry around all the time... can you get the groceries in it you usually buy? do you golf, ride a bike that needs to be hauled? Where do you park at work? at home? will it be garaged, or on the street? Basically imagine yourself doing all the things you do and then imagine doing them with this car with the amount of space for passengers and stuff that you use your car for on a daily basis. A good many people on here use the car with no problems as a daily driver - I don't, but then I have two other cars, a BMW wagon for hauling people and stuff, and a Honda Insight Hybrid for errands, and around town stuff. It really depends on how you use a vehicle and how that fits with what the Cayman can do or hold.

A main feature of this car is that it is a great pleasure to own and drive without being at all finicky. I used mine in the rain a lot at first and it took that in stride as it would door dings and only infrequent washing, if that is how you use it. You will spend a little more on tires and (infrequent) dealer service than with some other cars and if you are 6'4" and 300lbs think about getting in/out so often. Otherwise, I believe the Cayman S to be the best car there is, for regular or sport use, at up to twice the price. Do it! Enjoy!

Well there's just me and my girl- and the option of children ever is not even a consideration.
We live blocks from the grocery store- but typically it's only a couple of bags and with the front and rear storage I assuming I'll be ok there.
I do golf and saw a Cayman at the gym with a set of clubs in the back so I wasn't concerned there.
At home I have the garage- at work it's a typical parking lot.
To bdklein:
I am in Portland so it's a "city" (I quote that due to the fact that I moved here a year ago from Manhattan- so Portland is kind of like a "city" but not really ) Not much in the way of mudslides here (thankfully) and the rain isn't really all that bad- winter driving we'll have 3 days or so of 1 inch "snowstorms" or so they're termed- LOL.
gfspencer:
Please upload pics of the Cayman with the sheet of plywood- I want to laugh and cry at the same time- heheheh!
The CS is not my daily driver for the reasons given by beez. On days where I need to drive with my two kids, I need to use a different car obviously. For me, I use my M5 about 2/3 of the time, and my CS the rest. My wife prefers driving her own car, a RX-300 SUV, but she loves being a passenger when I'm driving the CS!

The Cayman is fun to drive, reliable, reasonably efficient, and holds more than a sports car has a right to. If you need a daily driver for one or two people, don't need to carry more than it will hold, and can live with what can be generously be described as a firm ride, then you can enjoy the car every day of your life. I drive mine at least five days a week, and find it very satisfying and practical.
1. Mileage. As your daily driver if you put tons of mileage on the car, not only does it depreciate the value, but as mileage goes up the car is more likely to wear in small ways.
2. Weather damage. The car is capable in the wet and snow, but salt and rocks and sand are going to hurt the paint over time. You will get rock chips. Cracked windshield. Chipped headlights. Paint swirls on dark cars even if you hand wash the car. The mats and rugs will get nasty from your dirty boots.
For me, I'd rather have a car that looks and feels brand new when I pull out on a clear morning. When I get into it, I want to feel like I do on the very first day. On regular days when I have my coffee in my lap and am tired on the way to work, stuck in traffic barely moving, I don't mind being in a second comfy little car with no pep and lots of practicalities.
