Registration Taxes?

My wife and I will move to our house in Michigan sometime in the next two years, which means that I'll be registering my Cayman and other cars there. In looking at the Michigan SOS website, all they say is that the registration fee is based on the base purchase price of the car. I'm spoiled living in Illinois, where we pay a flat fee, regardless of the car's value, so I'm a little concerned about what the fee will be in Michigan.

For those of you living in states with fees or personal property taxes based on a car's actual value, how much do you pay for annual registration? Is there anyone in Michigan with actual experience with how much they charge?

Thanks, I'll appreciate any feedback.

Chris

In New York, which has no Personal Property Tax, we pay 8% of the actual purchase price, one time, on first registration (The sales tax in Monroe County) After that we pay a small fee based on weight each year. It works out to about $.0065/lb.

This is the ONLY bargain in New York!!

Thanks, Blackbird, that's a relief. I don't mind paying $300, I was just worried about it being $1000 a year. As it is I may end up having to get rid of a few vehicles.

Chow,

Thanks, I found that also - it really seems like Michigan doesn't expect anyone to move into the state!

Be glad that you are not moving to Taxachusetts. My first year exise tax was close to $1000.00 plus the sales tax. The exise tax decreases each year but not fast enough for me.

Ouch for you guys. In Texas it's 6.25% state tax when you buy, then around $70 a year for tag renewal each year after that.
